Itinerary

Day 1 Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to learn about the organization's work in caring for injured and orphaned animals | After a scenic train ride into the mountains, enjoy views of imposing icebergs and Spencer Glacier during an easygoing float trip on the Placer River | Stroll through cottonwood, aspen and spruce forest from one picturesque viewpoint to the next.

Day 2 Prince William Sound, one of Alaska's most famous waterways and a vast unspoiled wilderness, sets the stage for an amazing wildlife cruise | Our captain helps spot sea otters, seals and perhaps humpback whales | Amid a stunning mountain backdrop, glide past towering tidewater glaciers and walk along a rocky shoreline.

Day 3 Travel past Turnagain Arm, where extreme bore tides make for dramatic water movement as the Chugach Mountains loom above | Watch sled dogs in action and enjoy stories about the epic Iditarod race.

Day 4 Journey to spectacular Denali National Park | Look for gray wolves and grizzly bears as we venture deep into the park | Arrive at our secluded lodge in Kantishna.

Days 5-6 Enjoy a full day in Denali, with guided walks, gold panning or an optional flight around Denali's towering peak | Take a stroll after dinner—no need for a flashlight in the glow of the midnight sun!

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations & Service Standards

Alaska is a land of rustic and rugged beauty. While Backroads has selected the best possible lodging available in the places we visit, simplicity and comfort often outweigh elegance and luxury in this great state. Generally speaking, customer service in Alaska can seem slow and casual when compared with the high standards of hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Patience, a sense of humor and an appreciation for the cultural differences that abound in this population-sparse setting will help to make the most of your experience.

Alaska: Great Land, Great Distances

Did you know that Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas and four times the size of California? To experience the full grandeur of Alaska, we must cover great distances and unfortunately we can't do it all on foot. We spend more time in the van on this trip than on the typical Backroads trip (2–5 hours on several days). Rest assured, the views from these shuttles are spectacular and the journey is worthwhile!

Why Travel with Backroads in Alaska

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Alaska trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

The Best Leaders in Alaska

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Alaska, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

The Value of Casual Hotels

In addition to the ideal balance of comfort and hospitality in our choice of lodgings, this trip featuring Casual Hotels includes nearly all of your meals, plus everything from cocktail receptions to the best snacks along the road. So there's rarely a need to reach for your wallet – we've got you covered.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Alaska with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Alaska designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
