Discover the Wonders of Wyoming's Wild Preserves

  • Bubbling mud pots, spouting geysers and steaming vents at Yellowstone
  • Bike beneath the Teton Range's sawtooth mountains amid shimmering lakes and dense forests
  • The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, with its multicolored walls and thundering waterfalls
  • Splash down the Snake River on an exhilarating rafting trip
  • Eagles and bison and bears, oh my!

In Yellowstone and the Tetons, the West is still wild. Geysers gush. Mud pots bubble. Sawtooth peaks reach for the sky. Bison graze in the meadows. Osprey camp out atop awesome pinnacles. And we're getting wild, too! Hiking, biking, kayaking, rafting and more. Two national parks. Wild scenery. Wild life. Wild fun.

Yellowstone and Tetons Multisport Tour Map

Itinerary

Day 1 Be awed by bubbling mud pots, spouting geysers and steaming vents in Yellowstone Hike through the heart of the park into the Upper Geyser Basin, taking in the sights, sounds—and smells!—of this fascinating wonderland Kids will love seeing the fumaroles of Biscuit Basin and legendary Old Faithful Geyser up close.

Day 2 Behold Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the park's most dramatic feature, where waterfalls cascade over pastel-colored cliffs A leisurely walk through alpine meadows and stands of lodgepole pines along the canyon rim provides breathtaking vistas deep into the gorge.

Days 3-4 Eagles and bison and bears, oh my!  Local guides take us on a flat-water kayaking trip across Yellowstone Lake Breathe in fresh mountain air while kicking back with your family under a vast Wyoming sky Explore Grand Teton National Park, a paradise of bluebell-strewn meadows, shimmering lakes, thick forests and sawtooth mountains Perhaps you'll opt for a horseback ride, scenic boat cruise or a fishing excursion.

Days 5-6 Spin beneath the spine of the Teton Range as we follow the valley floor Traffic up ahead—watch for roaming bison!  Adults explore the Wild West town of Jackson, while kids join the Kid Activity Expert for some fun of their own  Ready to get wet? Paddle thrilling Class II and III rapids with expert river runners down the Snake River.

There were 11 of us, 68 years down to 8 years. I wondered how it would go with diverse ages, endurance and interests. It far exceeded my expectations!!! Everyone had a favorite activity but everyone loved our leaders, the scenery and the quality and quantity of time spent as a family and we met other nice families, too! There was not one negative thing to say!

Accommodations & Service Standards

Jackson Lake Lodge, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Old Faithful Inn are fairly rustic national park lodges that reflect the natural surroundings of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. While these historic hotels offer simpler accommodations than the typical Backroads property, they provide unparalleled access to the best riding and hiking in the region. Please note that the guest rooms are not equipped with televisions or air-conditioning.

Generally speaking, service in the national parks can seem laid-back when compared with the high standards of service found on other Backroads trips.

Interpretive Guides & Hiking Without Your Leaders

The National Park Service limits the size of all groups and Grand Teton National Park doesn't permit guided hiking. Accordingly, in Yellowstone National Park you'll hike in small groups with Backroads leaders. In Grand Teton National Park you'll bike in small groups with Backroads leaders; however you'll hike without Backroads leaders or local guides. Your leaders will provide pre-walk briefings, maps and directions. We appreciate your cooperation with the park's regulations.

Comments about Yellowstone & Tetons Family Multisport Adventure Tour:

This is our first Backroads trip, and bar none - this is the best trip my family has ever taken. And we have traveled all over the world. The guides were top-notch and took care of every single detail. It's so nice not to have to worry about anything. My kids still talk about this trip all the time and how great it was. We are not super exercisers but it challenged us just enough to do things we normally wouldn't think of doing and we had an awesome time! We can't wait to do another one when we have the time!

Incredible trip

Comments about Yellowstone & Tetons Family Multisport Adventure Tour:

All three leaders were excellent--they were fun, organized, and knowledgeable. The combination of activities made the trip lots of fun, and there was a great combination of free time and organized time. Challenges were only on a personal level; there was no sense of competitiveness, which I had worried about. Food was delicious and plentiful. We got so much done in such a relatively short time. My daughter (age 16) and I both loved the trip. She was in-between the kids ages and the adults, but after a first night with the adults she chose the kids' activities and had more fun!

Comments about Yellowstone & Tetons Family Multisport Adventure Tour:

The trip was great. The travel agent with Backroads was beyond helpful and it is because of her that the trip was as great as it was. She placed us with a perfect group. My kids were happy and thus so were my husband and I. The guides were great. The food was great. And the land was beautiful. I won't give credit to Backroads for the land. The credit there goes to the Lord above.

Why Travel with Backroads in Yellowstone and Tetons

Proud to Be the Family Favorite

This is the most popular family trip in the Backroads global portfolio. After exploring these two great national parks for 37 years, we know a lot about how the mountains were created, where wildlife wanders and when the geysers will likely erupt. Regional Manager Linda Cassell, who's spent nearly three decades designing trips here, uses her deep expertise and vast local network to create an ideal mix of activities – so you and your family enjoy the best possible experience.

Leaders Focused on Families

When everyone's together, there's lots going on; and when kids' and adults' priorities diverge, it can seem like two different trips. That's why our Family Adventures in Yellowstone and Tetons have three Trip Leaders—including a dedicated Kids Activity Expert who regularly takes younger travelers off to do their own thing. Other companies try to get by with two leaders; we step up and do it right. For more on our family focus, check this out.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Yellowstone and Tetons trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Yellowstone and Tetons live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multisport trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Yellowstone and Tetons trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Yellowstone and Tetons—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Custom-Designed Bikes for Kids

Only Backroads provides bikes specifically designed for younger riders. Find out more information on all of our kids' bikes and optional accessories. And check out Tom Hale's blog post about biking with your kids.

Plenty of Kids on Your Trip

It may be hard to imagine being on a family trip with no other families on it—but it happens regularly with some companies. On a Backroads Family Adventure there are typically several families on each departure, creating more opportunities for your kids to make new friends as they try fun things together – which is a big part of the experience.

We Were Born Here (in 1979)

Backroads has been inviting active travelers to explore our own backyard since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. We offer more trips than anyone else in Yellowstone and Tetons, and we've spent more years finding the best ones. What keeps it real is having a consistent vision and the same passionately committed leadership for nearly four decades.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

A Great Trip for Teens

This Family Adventure, with its blend of challenging activities and cool places to explore, is ready to erase the doubtful looks of the toughest travel critics around: teenagers. We're not saying there won't be a single eye-rolling response (or the odd WhatsApp exchange with the gang back home), but this trip has plenty to keep teens in the moment and part of the family.
