Interpretive Guides & Hiking Without Your Leaders

The National Park Service limits the size of all groups and Grand Teton National Park doesn't permit guided hiking. Accordingly, in Yellowstone National Park you'll hike and bike in small groups with Backroads leaders. In Grand Teton National Park you'll hike without Backroads leaders or local guides. Your leaders will provide pre-walk briefings, maps and directions. We appreciate your cooperation with the park's regulations.

Tents & Sleeping Essentials

Our spacious dome tents comfortably accommodate two adults plus luggage. Cots with an extra-thick inflatable sleeping pad, sleeping bag and sleep sheet are all provided. Backroads does not supply pillows, so please bring your own. No lighting is provided in your tent, so a small flashlight is essential.

Restroom Facilities

Restroom facilities are available at each campground. The restroom floors can be wet, so be sure to bring flip-flops! We also recommend bringing a hanging toiletry bag since space is limited and surfaces are wet. Be advised that outlets and mirrors are few. Backroads does not supply towels, so please be sure to pack your own.

Attire

Comfortable, casual attire and footwear is strongly recommended—leave those heels or imported Italian leather loafers at home! Also be sure to bring along a few warm layers for the cooler evenings.

Why Travel with Backroads in Yellowstone and Tetons

Just as Faithful (Not Quite So Old)

After exploring these two extraordinary national parks for 37 years, we know quite a lot about how the mountain ranges were created, where the wildlife wanders and when Old Faithful and other, lesser-known geysers are likely to erupt. Linda Cassell, our Regional Manager, has spent nearly three decades designing and managing trips here. She uses her deep knowledge and vast network of local connections to create an active camping experience you'll never forget.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Yellowstone and Tetons trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

No One Else Camps Like This

Only Backroads offers our style of Deluxe Camping in Yellowstone and Tetons. Whether you're a first-timer or an old pro, you'll love how we immerse you in spectacular surroundings—and look after all the chores. Enjoy a great meal by the fire with interesting companions, then a peaceful night on your comfortable cot. Here's more on how we do the great outdoors.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Yellowstone and Tetons trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

The Best Leaders in Yellowstone and Tetons

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Yellowstone and Tetons, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

We Were Born Here (in 1979)

Backroads has been inviting active travelers to explore our own backyard since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. We offer more trips than anyone else in Yellowstone and Tetons, and we've spent more years finding the best ones. What keeps it real is having a consistent vision and the same passionately committed leadership for nearly four decades.

We Invented the Multisport Trip

After 30 years of creating Backroads Multisport Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Yellowstone and Tetons you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multisport trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.
