We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
There are a limited number of paved roads traversing Hawaii’s rugged landscape. While Backroads strives to find quiet roadways off the beaten track, many of this trip’s routes include sections along highways with fast-moving traffic. You’re always welcome to jump in the shuttle to avoid the busier roads.
In order to bring you the best of the Big Island, we spend more time shuttling on this trip than on many other Backroads trips. We want to make the most of your time on this beautiful and diverse island, and our itinerary—complete with shuttles—has been specifically designed to do just that.
Hawaii encompasses an astonishing array of climate zones. You should be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions during our stay near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including heavy rain and strong winds. The Kohala Coast also experiences powerful winds, which may make cycling coastal roads difficult or require us to alter our planned activities. In addition, water activities may be cancelled due to high surf/wind.
Kilauea Lodge is a fairly rustic property in a stunning location near Volcanoes National Park. Although clean and comfortable, the guest rooms are basic and are not equipped with phones or televisions.

The BEST vacation for large families who love adventure!
I was introduced to Backroads for the first time this year, despite having little biking experience. At first, it felt a bit intimidating, but I ended up having an absolutely incredible time, learning new skills and uncovering new passions along the way. The Multi-Adventure trip was the perfect opportunity for family members from all walks of life to come together and enjoy the journey. My guides were exceptionally supportive, making sure everyone felt comfortable and engaged. I had an amazing time exploring native cultures and soaking in the breathtaking scenery. By the end of the trip, I had developed a true love for biking, and I'm excited to incorporate it into my everyday life. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and I'm already looking forward to my next adventure!

Fantastic vacation: exhilarating and informative
Our three leaders were enthusiastic, helpful, and well-organized. The e-bikes were great and allowed us to bike up and down hills easily and cover long distances. The scenery was spectacular and we had a lot of variety when biking and hiking. We had great vegetarian snacks and meals and we met some interesting people. It was an excellent blend of physical activity, history, culture, and socialization. The leaders made the whole trip memorable.
Beautiful Island, Fantastic Trip!
We had a great trip to Hawaii - yes, even with the volcano. Most of the island was unaffected and the activities were awesome! Kayaking/Snorkeling was amazing and the biking/hiking was great too. You should go!
