What's Included
See moreStraight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On many nights, the gourmet restaurants where we dine offer specially prepared, limited or fixed menus featuring a delicious selection of authentic regional cuisine.
While we always aim to get off the beaten path, this region is a popular coastal vacation spot for European tourists. You’ll be among locals and fellow travelers when we visit towns, and there can be moderate car traffic on some of the country roads we bike on (cars in this area are very respectful of bikers).
Amid Basque country and the Pyrenees foothills, you can look forward to some great climbs and steep descents on our hike and bike rides. If you want a boost, e-bikes are available and we can flatten some of the more challenging portions of the routes with strategic shuttles, but you should be comfortable handling hilly terrain or hopping in the van for a lift.

What a trip
One of the best I've done so far.
Basque Country Trip far exceeded my expectations
Everything from the incredible scenery, varied daily agenda, activity level, food, hotels and last but definitely not least - our guides Mathilde, Macin and Jaime made this a trip of a lifetime! Words can't do it justice, pictures will help. The best 6 days ever. LOVED every single minute. Reserve this trip ASAP and I only hope you get our amazing guides too. We adored them and they made our entire time together more special than we could have ever imagined.

Basque Country
My wife and I had an incredible time. The biking, hiking, kayaking, eating, etc.. was spectacular. Our tour guides were truly fantastic. In addition we has the opportunity to meet people from all over the US and share in the fun! We can't wait for our next Backroad adventure!!
Our third backroads trip and best one yet!
The experience was amazing. I traveled with my family and we all had a blast and enjoyed the variety of activities. Our leaders were great as always. My favorite meals were the backroads picnics. It was also fun getting to know the other families on the trip. I enjoyed how we could opt out of the afternoon activities and go to the beach or relax. The hotels were very nice too.

a fab basque country multi activity trip!
Just back from our 6th Backroads trip this time with our 20 year old son, walking, cycling, kayaking and even surfing in the Spanish and French pays basque. Stunning hotels in San Sebastián, St Jean de Luz with great shopping and food too , an actual palace in Biarritz both right on the ocean. Amazing hilly cycling.
Great way to take in a unique cultural experience
This area is fascinating and has its own identity, and this trip allowed us to see it up close and personal. I enjoyed experiencing the language , food, landscapes, sports and people. The hiking and biking were scenic and challenging. Great guides as usual.
Fell in love with Basque Country
Basque Country is a special corner of the world, and the Backroads trip was a wonderful way to experience it. Great leaders, wonderful hiking, biking, kayaking, surfing, hotels and meals. Backroads leaders were all European, added enrichment to the trip. A wonderful mix of activities and experiences, and our teenage boys (three of them) had the time of their lives.
Best trip ever!
We need to call out our two Tour Leaders - David and Mario and Support Person - Pablo. David- Super sweet, engaging, EXTREMELY professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Never heard "No" or "I cannot" come out of his mouth. Always a smile and a sincere demeanor, "Hey I want to make this the best trip of your life". Mario - While new, was equally energetic, upbeat, encouraging, and thoughtful. He took it upon himself to run to a pharmacy to get me motion sickness medication. Pablo, the workhorse - literally, always had a smile, always offering a beautifully presented snack, drink, etc. was extremely knowledgeable and always willing to understand and answer any questions we had. The operation ran like a Swiss Watch and it was because of each member's selfless input. The trip itself was amazing but what made if REALLY SPECIAL was the personality and attention to detail David, Pablo and Mario brought to the equation. Hats off to BACKROADS for obtaining some great talent...don't ever let them get away!!

Basque Country Multi-Adventure trip was a standout
We have been on six other Backroads trips and this was the very best among many other wonderful trips. We had a private group of 9 couples and Backroads went above and beyond to make this an extraordinary experience for all.
Amazing Trip to Basque Country
We absolutely loved this trip to Basque Country. We learned so much about the Basque people and culture while hiking and biking through the beautiful countryside. A good level of activity with various options each day to do more or less. Perfect for our teenagers that wanted a little less challenging options and my husband and myself who wanted the more difficult options. Beautiful accommodations at each stop.
