Getting excited for your active adventure? So are we!

To ensure your journey is smooth and to help you prepare for your trip, we've compiled important information about your destination(s). Entry requirements listed are for US citizens and are subject to change; requirements may vary for travelers from other countries. Stay up to date on entry information via travel.state.gov and cdc.gov or your local consulate.

A valid passport is required for international travel for all US citizens. Check the expiration date and physical condition of your passport and verify travel document requirements with the consulates of each country you plan to visit. For most destinations, passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond travel dates. You cannot travel on a passport you have previously declared as lost or stolen even if you subsequently locate it. Passports issued to minors under the age of 16 are set to expire every 5 years.

Additional entry requirements and regulations are organized by destination below. While select destinations have specific medical requirements, consulting with your doctor about any additional health concerns prior to traveling is always advised.

Cuba

Visa & Other Entry Requirements:

Certification of Travel: You should have received this form from us after booking your trip. You are required to return this document to Backroads prior to your departure.

Tourist Card: You'll purchase your Tourist Card/Visa the same day of travel directly through your airline, typically at the departure gate for your connecting flight to Cuba. Visa cost will be $85-$100 USD. Reminder: you are traveling under the “Support to the Cuban People” License.

D’Viajeros Online Form (https://www.dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu/inicio): Must be completed before departure. D’Viajeros Portal is available in Spanish and English; you can toggle to English in the upper right-hand corner, at which point you’ll click "Form Request" to complete the simple form. Note: For "Place of Accommodation," this is the location of your first night. You may use the "Hotel" dropdown, or select "House or Room for Rent" if you are staying at a Casa Particular or Airbnb. Once the form is completed, you must save the QR code on your phone (or print it out) so that you’re ready to present it upon arriving in Cuba. Don't count on an email, even if the page prompts you that one will be sent.

Insurance: Visitors entering Cuba must have health insurance with coverage in the country. US airlines that fly directly to Cuba include this travel medical insurance in the cost of the airline ticket. Your boarding pass serves as proof of insurance, which is typically valid for 30 days.

Passport: A valid passport is required for travel to Cuba; must be valid for 180 days beyond your entry date into Cuba. Blank page requirements: at least two.

If you are a non-US citizen participating on our Backroads Support for the Cuban People trip, you must transit through the United States before your trip to Cuba in order to be subject to US jurisdiction. You must also carry with you all necessary documentation to enter or re-enter the United States (visa, green card, ESTA visa, etc.) and any documents for onward travel to a third country after Cuba (e.g., Mexico, the Bahamas, Canada).

Vaccination: None. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of mosquito-borne illnesses, including dengue and Zika, in some regions surrounding Cuba. For more specific information on health precautions for travel in Cuba, consult your doctor, the Cuban Embassy, or the CDC at 800-CDC-INFO (232-4636) or wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel

Additional Info:

Currency: The local CUP (Cuban peso) has experienced huge inflation in recent years; it's therefore recommended to use euros, Canadian dollars (CAD), or USD when paying directly. US bank cards are not accepted in Cuba – $150 USD per day (or equivalent) is recommended as backup cash before/after your Backroads trip. If you prefer to carry local currency, you may exchange your currency into CUP at airports or hotels, but be aware that you cannot exchange CUP back into other currencies. Once you have it, you’ll want to spend it!

App Store Access: All apps you intend to use in Cuba (including the Backroads navigation app, which you’ll receive access to via email about one week before your trip) must be downloaded before departing the United States. The Apple App Store is not available in Cuba.

Drinking Water: Tap water is not drinkable in Cuba and bottled water can be hard to find. Of course we’ll ensure you’re well-watered, but if you already own a water filter bottle like a Grayl Geopress Water Purifier or a LifeStraw, feel free to bring it to reduce waste.

Local donations: If you think you might be interested in bringing material donations for locals you meet in Cuba, review the “Gifts” section of your Travel Planner. While this is absolutely not a requirement, we always hear regrets from guests who didn’t consider it in advance.
