Activity Level:
2-4
Every Backroads trip is designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests and fitness levels. Several routes and a range of levels are offered each day so you can choose how much or how little activity you want to do. Learn more about how we determine activity levels.
Route notes
The terrain on this trip includes rugged mountain trails with rocky steep paths that are often exposed to sheer slopes. Some sections require scrambling and the use of chains; this terrain may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights. The substantial elevation gain and loss (as well as the rocky uneven paths) can make the routes feel more challenging than the mileage may suggest.

Straight talk
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Terrain & Trail Support
Our hikes through Lofoten's captivating rugged terrain climb rocky, uneven paths with some steep sections, many of which are spotted with mud or boulders. Vehicles or boats will get us to and from the trailheads, but the remote nature of these trails means we offer fewer route options. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Two Leaders
We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van. Occasionally we also hike with local guides, allowing us to offer even more support options on these routes.
Accommodations
The Lofoten Islands are rich in heritage and rustic charm, and while Backroads has selected the best properties in the places we visit, history and character often outweigh elegance and luxury in this remote corner of Norway. While two of our hotels, Nusfjord Rorbuer and Reiner Rorbuer—traditional waterfront rorbuer (fishermen's cabins)—offer simpler amenities than the typical Backroads property, they provide us with the greatest access to the best hiking in the region. It's also worth noting that these cabins are set up more like shared apartments, with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and a common living room area that includes a small kitchen, rather than typical hotel room—all part of the charm!
