Itinerary

Days 1-2 From the capital city of Reykjavík, we head to the smoky Reykjadalur Valley for a hike in the rugged landscape around Mount Hengill | Pass bubbling mud pots with views of Lake Thingvallavatn | Hike from the Seltún geothermal area with spectacular vistas of Lake Kleifarvatn and the iconic peak of Mount Keilir | Fly to the almost-mythical Faroe Islands—self-governing, this group of 18 volcanic islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Day 3 Wake up in serene Gjógv on Eysturoy Island, with its colorful turf-roofed cottages and steep verdant cliffs | Above town, hike through picturesque open fields and sheep pastures and climb to soaring clifftop vistas | Spot puffins, oystercatchers or the great skua—the Faroe Islands are home to about 110 species of migrant seabirds | Make your way to charming Soldarfjordur, with quaint homes dotting its shore—visit a garden and enjoy dinner in a local home overlooking the water.

Day 4 In Vestmanna, take a guided boat tour around striking soaring cliffs and thundering waterfalls likened to Jurassic Park | Look for brave sheep grazing on the near-vertical grass atop the cliffs | In picture-perfect Sorvágur, sample tasty Faroese treats in a local home | Hike to the Faroes' largest lake for a remarkable view of the lake appearing to hang dramatically over the sea and the incredible Geitaskoradrangur sea stack | Journey through scenery right out of Middle-earth and an undersea tunnel to the tiny capital city of Tórshavn, named for the Norse god of thunder, Thor.

Days 5-6 Set out for a trek to two small lakes and a dais of rocks used for public gatherings since the 1800s | With lovely views unfolding of Hesur and Koltur islands, reach the historic ruins of Magnus Cathedral at Kirkjubour | Savor local fare prepared by the seventeenth generation Patursson family in their 11th-century farmhouse | Make your way back to colorful Tórshavn for a celebratory dinner of fresh-caught fish and succulent lamb | Bid farewell to the Faroes as we board a morning flight back to Reykjavík.

Note: The terrain on this trip is a mix of narrow rocky mountain paths, lava field trails and well maintained routes. We encounter steeply cut ascents, muddy and boggy rolling headlands and steep descents most days. Cliffs and viewpoints are often very exposed, without fences or guard rails. We walk on very few flat trails and most trails require steady and consistent footwork.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
