Blue Ridge Mountains Walking & Hiking Tour

Greenville to Asheville

  • Explore the grounds of opulent Biltmore Estate and luxuriate at the estate's elegant inn
  • The breathtakingly beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, with spectacular waterfalls and awe-inspiring vistas
  • From art deco to abstract expressionism, creativity thrives in eclectic Asheville
  • Lose yourself in the pristine beauty of deep gorges, granite rock domes, peaceful woodland and idyllic waterfalls

Consider the great places to explore on foot. The Alps. Venice. Perhaps the rhododendron-shaded trails of Southern Appalachia should be added to your list? Indeed, few besides the locals have heard of Pinnacle Mountain or Carrick Creek Falls, and few "outsiders" can imagine the great hikes that await here. We won't tell if you won't.

Itinerary

Day 1 Journey to Paris Mountain State Park, developed during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps and now on the National Register of Historic Places  Meander along a creek through mixed pine and hardwood forests up to Mountain Lake and its historic dam  Savor the beautiful surroundings and elegant atmosphere of the Mediterranean-style Hotel Domestique.

Day 2 What's your pleasure—a lovely creekside loop through an oak, hickory and hemlock forest to Carrick Creek Falls?  Or a challenging climb up to Table Rock Mountain for stunning views of forests and the Blue Ridge Mountains?  Perhaps you'll choose to hike both.

Day 3 Today's walk through pine and hemlock woodland in DuPont Forest is all about waterfalls —four postcard-perfect cascades that range from 8 to 120 feet  Later in the day, catch your breath at the sight of French-inspired Biltmore Estate, which still reigns as America's largest privately owned residence, and one of the world's most opulent properties  Asheville welcomes you with an appealing blend of Jazz Age sophistication and bohemian eccentricities.

Days 4-5 Soak up the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with stretch-forever vistas of valleys, mountains, woodland, waterfalls and historic sites  Hike amid luxuriant rhododendron and rocky granite crags to some of the most stunning panoramic views  Treat yourself to a tasting at Antler Hill Village and Winery  Join a private tour of the Biltmore Estate before gathering for a farewell lunch.

Very good balance of types of hikes throughout the 5 days. Nice to have options. Excellent accommodations. Extraordinarily well-organized from snacks to daily agendas; exceptional attention to detail.

Why Travel with Backroads in North and South Carolina

Walk Trails Worthy of a Country Tune

We get you to the very best hiking and walking routes in this beautiful stretch of the Appalachians – thanks to a Trip Expert who's a North Carolina native and has been hiking in the mountains her whole life. We also know where the perfect trail should lead: Backroads is the only active travel company to stay at the acclaimed Hotel Domestique, where you can soak in the pool while taking in gorgeous views of nearby vineyards and the Blue Ridge peaks beyond.

The Best Leaders in North and South Carolina

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in North and South Carolina, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our North and South Carolina trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Only the Best Hotels

On this Premiere Inn trip, you can count on the best lodgings North and South Carolina has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

More Leaders to Support You

On our North and South Carolina trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in North and South Carolina live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Choose Your Fellow Travelers

With Backroads you won't end up with kids on what you thought was an adult trip; we have exclusive departures for families, so they're off having their own adventures. As you browse our unrivaled selection of trips and dates, you can count on finding a trip in North and South Carolina that's geared exclusively to your choice of traveling companions.
