New! Canadian Rockies Family Breakaway Heli-Hiking Tour

Glaciers & Lakes from Banff to the Columbia Mountains

  • Unleash your sense of adventure and join us in a rugged and undisturbed wilderness
  • Hike amid lush meadows, pristine lakes, glaciers, waterfalls and towering peaks
  • Begin in “civilization” with a classic Canadian Rockies hiking experience near Lake Louise
  • Journey by helicopter to reach otherwise inaccessible terrain—and choose to trek on a glacier or climb a peak by via ferrata
  • Each excursion is a different discovery as our expert guides choose the most spectacular location to suit the day

Dramatic solitude. Cherish it on memorable hikes amid jagged peaks and translucent lakes. By helicopter, you and your gang will journey to areas so remote it would be an epic challenge to get there on your own—if you could get there at all. Sharp rock formations atop Mount Nimbus are not to be feared. On this trip, they are to be savored.

Days 4-5 Soar by helicopter to unspoiled areas ideal for exploration, selecting from a full menu of hiking options and alpine activities each day  Cross ridgelines weaving up and down through cirques and hanging valleys, each with its own glacial lake or tarn reflecting brilliant colors, from deep azure to shimmering turquoise  You'll have the endless views of the Columbia Mountains and glaciers all to yourself—despite the area's worldwide reputation!  Take an adrenaline-pumping excursion to the summit of Mount Nimbus with the help of North America's longest via ferrata  Get up‐close and personal with the immense blue tongue of the Conrad ice field on your all-day trek of the Conrad Glacier, navigating wild canyons, cable bridges, zip lines suspended above rushing waters and via ferratas up vertical rock faces.

Day 6 Journey to Kootenay National Park and walk above beautiful Marble Canyon, crossing narrow bridges that offer vivid views down its steep walls  Inhale the aroma of the diverse flora and listen to the roar of Tokumm Creek crashing below  Explore the Paint Pots—a group of three iron-rich cold mineral springs that bubble up and stain the earth a deep red-orange—originally discovered and used by natives and still considered sacred to this day.

You'll spend two days hiking near lovely Lake Louise, then get set for the wilderness experience of a lifetime. Why Travel with Backroads in Canadian Rockies

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Canadian Rockies you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Canadian Rockies trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Canadian Rockies trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Canadian Rockies designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Our Family Breakaway trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

We Know Our Neighbours Well

Backroads first headed up to Canada in 1980, when an older Trudeau was prime minister, and we've been exploring its spectacular landscapes ever since. Our leaders are Canadian and many are proud to make their homes in Canadian Rockies—where we offer more trips than any other active travel company and have spent many more years finding the best ones.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Canadian Rockies live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.
