Dolomites Family Breakaway Walking & Hiking Tour

Mountain Majesty in Northern Italy

  • Hidden valleys, fairy-tale villages and awe-inspiring mountains in a multicultural mosaic
  • Ride chairlifts, then hike past grassy meadows, pine forests, alpenrose and mountain huts
  • Savor fine family dining in beautiful San Cassiano
  • Dramatic views of the Cinque Torri, a collection of towering stone pinnacles
  • Shop for authentic Tyrolean specialties, such as jams and cheeses

The Dolomites cast a spell. The immense mountains. The sweeping flower-filled pastures and endless views from gondola rides. The simple goodness of spaghetti al ragù at a rifugio trailside hut. The decadence of gourmet cuisine. Enjoy the good life with your family—the Italians call it benessere—and be spellbound in the Dolomites.

Our daily route options may travel in different directions from each other, depending on the route level. Please keep this in mind when choosing your walking/hiking option each day, especially if connecting up with other guests midday is important to you.

Two Leaders

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.

Why Travel with Backroads in Dolomites

We Grew Up in These Mountains

This classic trip among the craggy limestone peaks is a long-time Backroads favorite, and we know why: it was created by our Regional Manager for Italy, Jeff Cantarutti, who's been designing trips for nearly 25 years and – even more important – has deep family roots in the region. Welcome to Jeff's backyard. You won't want to leave.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Dolomites trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Dolomites trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Dolomites designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Our Family Breakaway trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for a single family of three or four people, subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

The Best Leaders in Dolomites

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Dolomites, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.
