...but cruising on a luxury river ship exceeded my expectations. I loved that being on the ship eliminated the need for van time, and not having to unpack and re-pack a day or two later was a major plus! What a cool way to experience four different countries in just over a week. The hiking was diverse but beautiful - I loved it all!

Accommodations, Group Size & Meals

The AmaWaterways ship is your floating luxury hotel, letting you visit new cities or countries without having to unpack and pack up your bags! We've limited our Backroads group size to 20, but just like any hotel, we'll be sharing the ship with other guests. These 164-passenger ships are custom-designed with a variety of inviting common spaces so you'll have plenty of room for both relaxing and socializing with other guests. All dinners are prepared by the ship's classically trained chefs and are served on board in the ship's dining rooms.

Itinerary Flexibility: Going with the Flow

Our daily itinerary is based on scheduled sailing and port arrival times and as a result some days have more opportunities for exploring on land while other days have more sailing time. Every river has its own unique temperament and for centuries water levels have shifted due to rain, temperature and agriculture. High water levels may mean the ship cannot pass under a bridge, low water levels result in slower sailing, and a disabled lock can also lead to some extra cruising time. Should any unforeseen change happen during your river cruise, we will work closely with AmaWaterways' Captain and staff, who are very experienced in going with the flow.

Stateroom Categories

In contrast to our usual land-based trips, which have similar room categories, the AmaWaterways ships offer a wide range of stateroom categories. The top-tier staterooms often fill fast so book as early as possible if this is important to you.

Double-Docking

Some port conditions require that ships tie up alongside each other, in which case you may need to walk through another ship to access our ship. This is a perfectly normal part of river cruising due to its popularity. You may occasionally experience obstructed views from your stateroom when the ship is double-docked, but rest assured that as soon as we set sail again your beautiful views will be restored.
$5,998 - $8,398

Comments about Danube Cobblestones & Countryside River Cruise Walking & Hiking Tour:

This was my first Backroads trip, but it definitely won't be my last! The leaders were professional and always encouraging and knowledgeable. I loved being on a ship and not having to pack and unpack each day, but I want to do more "land" trips in the future. The depth of choices for your trips and hikes will make my decision a little difficult, but that is very good!!

Danube River Cruise Hiking Tour

Comments about Danube Cobblestones & Countryside River Cruise Walking & Hiking Tour:

This trip was exceptional. The hikes were challenging (if you wanted them to be) and beautiful. I caught myself staring at the views saying "wowwww" more times than I can count. Even if the hikes had been boring and the views unappealing, however, the leaders would have made up for it. Alina and Tyler were attentive to guests' needs, answered every single question and held our interest with great conversation and interesting history lessons. They turned a group of 20-something strangers into a group of friends and ensured that conversation flowed easily between everyone with finesse; no easy task! Everyone also looked forward to the times when our support leader, Karem would pop up with a snack and something warm to drink, or surprised us with a beautiful picnic-style lunch. Overall, this trip was a joy in every sense and I cannot wait for my next excursion with Backroads!

Why Travel with Backroads in Danube River

The Habsburgs Would Love It

Here's your chance to walk and hike in five countries – the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary – while following one of the world's great rivers from Prague to Budapest. Combining the comforts of luxury cruising with the total immersion of active travel, this unique trips reflects the combined insights of various Backroads managers and leaders who know the regions along our route intimately.

We Reinvented the River Cruise

Backroads pioneered the active river trip, partnering with AmaWaterways, the leader in river cruising, to create a new kind of travel experience featuring biking and walking explorations from an elegant floating hotel. Read more about this ideal way to discover the heart of a region.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Danube River trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Danube River you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Danube River trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
