Itinerary

Day 1 Hike Mount Constitution, with 360-degree views of the San Juan archipelago, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker and the Olympic Range After taking the ferry to Orcas Island, delight in an awe-inspiring day of walking around Moran State Park, a nature-lover's paradise of 5,000 wooded acres  Kids (and kids at heart!) can cool off with a swim in Cascade Lake.

Day 2 Follow a pine- and fir-lined path around tranquil Mountain Lake on Orcas Island  Head to Orcas Island Pottery, where grown-ups can admire one-of-a-kind pieces and the kiddos can explore a unique treehouse  This evening, instruments, games and adventure await the youngsters at The Fun House.

Day 3 Hike to the sound a board a chartered vessel for a wildlife-watching cruise to San Juan Island  Discover why the island is so beloved by cyclists as you pedal on quiet roads through a diversity of scenery, from gently rolling farmland and forests to driftwood beaches and incredible marine panoramas  Check out the view of the Olympic Mountains from South Beach  Refresh with a dip in the lake at our campground  While grown-ups relax around the campfire, the younger set heads out for an evening of fun at a local eatery and a private tour of the Whale Museum.

Days 4-5 Paddle tandem kayaks through calm inlets and vast kelp beds, perhaps spotting harbor seals, otters and bald eagles  Partake in a variety of activities showcasing the best of San Juan Island  Two-wheel it on rolling terrain through peaceful pastures and out to sweeping coastal vistas  Enjoy one more night together around the campfire, sharing stories and playing games.

My family really enjoyed our trip in the Puget Sound. Fun activities, nice camp spots, pretty riding and the breaks on the ferries were so nice as well. We were fortunate to see a pod of orcas to cap the trip off too. Such a beautiful spot to see!

Comments about San Juan Islands Family Multisport Camping Adventure Tour:

LOVED spending time outside without setting up camp and doing dishes! The food was fabulous, we loved the hiking and biking. We enjoyed spending time with the other families on the trip - the leaders made it so easy - they played outdoor games with the kids every night before dinner and even gave them a ride back to camp in the van one day when my husband and I wanted to continue riding and they didn't. Great family trip!

Comments about San Juan Islands Family Multisport Camping Adventure Tour:

The San Juan Islands are truly beautiful, and I can't imagine a better place for a family trip. Traveled with my family of 5, including a 5 year old, 14 year old and 16 year old. This trip had something for everyone. The locals are friendly, roads are lightly trafficked, great hikes, terrific rides, time to play on the beach, a wonderful afternoon kayaking, and even a whale watching cruise! This trip has it all, and we loved the ferry rides too. The trip leaders, as always, were truly amazing as well.

Comments about San Juan Islands Family Multisport Camping Adventure Tour:

This was a fun filled trip with lots of activities for the family together and the kids and parents apart. The kids met new best friends and they all bonded so well that they had an outdoor slumber party under the stars on the last night of the trip. The other parents on the trip were great too. We loved the bike routes; they were perfect for a piccolo and burley trailer. The scenery and quiet roads were wonderful. The food was healthy and delicious. My kids loved the trip leaders and were sad to say goodbye. They were so much fun, wonderful role models, and they made the trip extra special.

The Pacific Northwest in summer. Ahhhhh. What a delight! It's a great place to escape with your family! There are so many fun activities in store for you! How about whale watching (and learning about the resident pod in Puget Sound), kayaking (while bald eagles soar all around), hiking to Mount Constitution (for epic views of the surroundings islands and waterways) and that's just the start! And on top of that there's no better way to camp than with Backroads. Who wants to deal with all of that equipment and all those camp chores. Well, you don't have to! The amazing Backroads crew does all of that for you. Smile!

Great Leaders, Great Week!

Comments about San Juan Islands Family Multisport Camping Adventure Tour:

This was my first Backroads trip and I was unprepared for how truly amazing it was! I took my 15 year old son with me. He lives with his mom 500 miles away from me, and I could not have imagined a better way to spend my limited time with him. We both made friends with the other guests... me with the adults and him with the other kids.
What surprised me the most about this trip? It was the leaders and camp crew. I knew going into this that there would be people supporting the trip and setting up our meals and tents for us. What I didn't realize is how incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, dedicated, resourceful and helpful they would be! One thing that stood out... (Of the many) ... I rolled my ankle while walking down a hill, and had cut my hike short. I got a ride in the support van and they dropped me off at a common area at the first campsite, where I hobbled to a picnic table to take the weight off my foot for a while. I had been alone for just a couple minutes when I saw the leader who had dropped me off coming around through the trees with tent equipment to set up. She saw me, and asked if I would like a cold beer. I said yes, and she took off running through the woods. Turns out they had to park the van about 1/4 mile away, and that's where the coolers were. Within minutes she appeared again, (still running), placed an ice cold beer on the table, and handed me a bag of ice for my ankle!
The rest of the trip had similar moments of "wow". The scenery was amazing, the food (camp food, no less!) was really impressive. Riding 25 miles on a bike with my son next to me... well I can hardly explain the great feeling we both had. I would highly recommend this type of trip if you want to spend some one-on-one bonding time with your kid.

This was our first Backroads trip with our son (5 years old at the time) and we had an amazing time. There were other families on the trip with kids about the same age as our son and they all played together day and night. The leaders cooked incredible meals from scratch (better than I cook at home!) and we enjoyed camp fires and games at night. I also loved that the leaders set up the tents. We all enjoyed the biking and ferry rides between 3 islands. The San Juan Islands are so beautiful and exploring them with Backroads is the way to go!

Why Travel with Backroads in San Juan Islands

Spotting Whales Beats Finding Wi-Fi

Over the decades we've spent exploring these islands and forging strong local connections, we've given special attention to the interests of families. This trip weaves in a whole array of activities for younger travelers, from blueberry picking, to beachcombing scavenger hunts, to learning the great West Coast art of tie-dyeing. The older kids can join you sea kayaking – and of course everyone comes together for activities like whale watching.

More Leaders to Support You

On our San Juan Islands trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our San Juan Islands trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore San Juan Islands with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multisport concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multisport trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

No One Else Camps Like This

Only Backroads offers our style of Deluxe Camping in San Juan Islands. Whether you're a first-timer or an old pro, you'll love how we immerse you in spectacular surroundings—and look after all the chores. Enjoy a great meal by the fire with interesting companions, then a peaceful night on your comfortable cot. Here's more on how we do the great outdoors.

Leaders Focused on Families

When everyone's together, there's lots going on; and when kids' and adults' priorities diverge, it can seem like two different trips. That's why our Family Adventures in San Juan Islands have three Trip Leaders—including a dedicated Kids Activity Expert who regularly takes younger travelers off to do their own thing. Other companies try to get by with two leaders; we step up and do it right. For more on our family focus, check this out.

Plenty of Kids on Your Trip

It may be hard to imagine being on a family trip with no other families on it—but it happens regularly with some companies. On a Backroads Family Adventure there are typically several families on each departure, creating more opportunities for your kids to make new friends as they try fun things together – which is a big part of the experience.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Like You, We're Family Experts

At Backroads we've honed our expertise in active family travel over many years and a lot of trips. We host at least 20 times more family guests than any other active company, so we're constantly gaining new insights that make our trips even better. Detailed planning, behind-the scenes logistics, unrivaled support from three Trip Leaders—all backed by a team that proudly creates the kind of experiences we'd want to share with our own families.

A Great Trip for Teens

This Family Adventure, with its blend of challenging activities and cool places to explore, is ready to erase the doubtful looks of the toughest travel critics around: teenagers. We're not saying there won't be a single eye-rolling response (or the odd WhatsApp exchange with the gang back home), but this trip has plenty to keep teens in the moment and part of the family.

The Best Leaders in San Juan Islands

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in San Juan Islands, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Time Together, Time Apart

Backroads is the leader in designing trips that ensure everyone, young and young-at-heart alike, has an amazing time. Your Backroads Family Adventure balances family activities with diversions designed exclusively for the kids—giving the adults a welcome break from making decisions, other than choosing whether to explore a few more miles or just enjoy each other's company. A family vacation where everyone gets to relax, recharge and have fun – what a concept!

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In San Juan Islands you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.
