Itinerary

Day 1 Get a bird's-eye view of Iceland's wild landscape as you fly from the capital to the country's second-largest city, Akureyri | Discover Eyjafjördur, Iceland's longest fjord, as we make our way along its shore with lush green meadows and mountainous border | Step off a boat for an exploration of Hrísey Island—a bird-lover's paradise and home to a picturesque fishing village with tidy traditional houses and exquisite views of the mainland.

Days 2-3 From the flanks of Illvidrishnjúkur our climb reveals panoramic vistas of headlands blanketed in vibrant green hues, descending sharply to the sea | Find yourself a mere 25 miles from the Arctic Circle and enjoy views of nearby mountains | Stroll through the quaint and historic village of Siglufjördur while kids get a taste of Icelandic culture with the locals | Pedal through the picturesque fishing communities lining Eyjafjördur's shores | Visit Ektafiskur and try a taste of hákarl (fermented shark)—if you dare! | Take a stroll to Godafoss, one of Iceland's largest and most spectacular waterfalls.

Days 4-5 Wake up in Húsavik, one of Iceland's most beautiful towns | Set sail on the area's nutrient-rich waters for a view of the impressive coastline and a chance to spot whales | Back on land, ride past farms, ranchland, emerald green hills and the shores of Lake Mývatn, with landscape carved by molten lava | Explore the Krafla lava fields | Witness energy from the Earth's core feeding Krafla's power station and navigate the smoldering spectrum of colorful paths through Leirhnjúkur | Marvel at the bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles and boiling pools of azure water against steep black-and-ocher slopes at the Hverir Volcano vents | Kids meet up with Icelandic horses for a riding adventure while adults climb to an up-close view of Hverfjall Volcano's caldera and surrounding otherworldly crater-like depressions.

Day 6 Your Icelandic adventure perfectly concludes with a journey into otherworldly Dimmuborgir (roughly translated to "dark forts" in Icelandic), where the 2,000-year-old lava flow site greets you with a remarkable maze of lava caves, arches, pillars and bridges.

The earlier you book, the more choice you'll have and the lower your price. And you can always change your mind — you won't be charged to transfer to a different trip before your final payment is due. View cancellation policy.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Climate & Itinerary Changes

The combination of Iceland's prolific waterfalls, vast ice fields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island's climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, strong wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). It is often very cold and wet, so please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip.In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in flight and mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured that your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Accommodations & Meals

Luxury Iceland-style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

Internal Flight

On this trip we travel by plane to reach the exclusive hotels and activities this destination has to offer. We will be flying on a charter flight with Eagle Air aboard a turbo-prop plane that seats 19 passengers.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

Leaders Focused on Families

When everyone's together, there's lots going on; and when kids' and adults' priorities diverge, it can seem like two different trips. That's why our Family Adventures in Iceland have three Trip Leaders—including a dedicated Kids Activity Expert who regularly takes younger travelers off to do their own thing. Other companies try to get by with two leaders; we step up and do it right. For more on our family focus, check this out.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Iceland you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Time Together, Time Apart

Backroads is the leader in designing trips that ensure everyone, young and young-at-heart alike, has an amazing time. Your Backroads Family Adventure balances family activities with diversions designed exclusively for the kids—giving the adults a welcome break from making decisions, other than choosing whether to explore a few more miles or just enjoy each other's company. A family vacation where everyone gets to relax, recharge and have fun – what a concept!

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Iceland with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Like You, We're Family Experts

At Backroads we've honed our expertise in active family travel over many years and a lot of trips. We host at least 20 times more family guests than any other active company, so we're constantly gaining new insights that make our trips even better. Detailed planning, behind-the scenes logistics, unrivaled support from three Trip Leaders—all backed by a team that proudly creates the kind of experiences we'd want to share with our own families.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
