Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Northern Lights

Northern lights are an incredible natural phenomenon and as such, are unpredictable. The probability of sightings are affected by weather, the phase of the moon, and many other factors, so even in Iceland, sightings are not guaranteed. Our journey through the Land of Fire and Ice is a magical winter adventure full of the planet's most remarkable natural treasures, whether or not we're lucky enough to see northern lights.

Cold-Weather Attire

It's not surprising that winter in a place called Iceland can be downright chilly. In order to enjoy hiking in the snow or rain you must wear waterproof snow boots or hiking boots and waterproof breathable pants, jacket and gloves. We may walk on snow, ice or mud so your clothing should be warm enough to allow you to comfortably remain outside in at- or below-freezing conditions for 2–4 hours at a time. Layers are encouraged to help regulate body temperature during activity. If necessary, we provide ice cleats or snowshoes based on terrain conditions.

Severe Weather & Itinerary Changes

You can't have a winter wonderland without some winter weather. During your trip snow, high winds and below-freezing temperatures are likely, and even rain is possible. Itinerary changes are quite common, so please know that if and when we encounter severe weather during the trip that causes road closures or affects our planned activities, your Trip Leaders will find alternate activities that you're sure to enjoy.

Accommodations & Meals

Luxury Iceland-style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

OPTIONAL YOGA

Our Hatha style of yoga is for all levels and focuses on stretching for flexibility, strength building and balance to complement our active days.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Iceland with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
