New! Iceland Eastern Fjords Multi-Adventure Tour

The Untouched Eastern Fjords of Iceland

  • Trek through the rugged east's dramatic landscape—waterfalls, highlands, wild coastline and steep fjords
  • Encounter the Eastfjords' abundant wildlife—herds of Icelandic horses, sheep, reindeer and vociferous nesting seabirds
  • Experience the diversity of Iceland's raw and untamed scenery by boat, bike and foot
  • Witness the mesmerizing effect of the Midnight Sun, one of the most magical natural spectacles on Earth

There's no question Reykjavík and its remarkable surrounds have their appeal. But if you travel just slightly farther afield, another world of geologic wonder unfolds in the fascinating land and seascapes of the Eastfjords. Find yourself dwarfed by narrow, sky-high fjords, majestic snow-dusted mountains and endless waterfalls. Emerald green highlands as far as the eye can see cradling colorful coastal villages, rare thriving forestland and exotic black-sand beaches—all of East Iceland's ancient and wondrous scenery awaits.

Iceland Map

Days 1-2 Journey from Reykjavík to Iceland's Eastfjords | From Egilsstadir, pedal through a striking landscape of rolling farmland, green hills and snowcapped mountains | The area around Lake Lagarfljót includes everything from Iceland's largest forest to cascading waterfalls | Set out on foot to explore Hengifoss, one of Iceland's highest waterfalls, and its colorful rock face.

Day 3 Walk to “Slow Food Iceland” founders' Vallanes Organic Farm for a tour of their idyllic land and gourmet product shop, followed by a field-to-table lunch | Hear wonderful tales from a local guide as we hike down a mountain pass alongside a tumbling waterfall and into a stunning fjord.

Day 4 Embark on a spectacular coastal hike to Skálanes—a nature reserve at the mouth of Seydisfjördur Fjord | Wildflower-strewn meadows and sandy beaches lead the way to a delicious lunch at Skálanes Lodge | Keep an eye out for the 47 species of birds—including eider ducks and puffins—that inhabit the Skálanesbjarg Cliffs.

Days 5-6 Set sail on an authentic Icelandic fishing boat through a dramatic fjord | Our boat captain invites us to lunch at his fishing cottage café | Panoramic views accompany you as you ride across the Vallanes Fjord peninsula—and East Iceland hidden gem | Conclude with a picturesque walk along the Gilsá River to the lovely and little Gilsárfoss waterfall—stand right behind its jetting waters!

Climate & Itinerary Changes

The combination of Iceland's prolific waterfalls, vast icefields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island's climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in flight and mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Accommodations & Meals

Luxury Iceland-style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

Note: The Eastfjords are characterized by steep valleys and undulating terrain. Our hiking routes are a mix of maintained and unmaintained rocky mountain trails including some narrow and exposed areas. The biking terrain is made up of rolling headlands with some steeper sections, and we are also likely to encounter chip-seal and gravel road surfaces. As a result, our routes on this trip feel more challenging than the mileage may suggest.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Iceland with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multi-adventure trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.
