Alaska's coastal wilderness is legendary, the ideal setting for an epic tale. Voyage by sea through the famed Inside Passage to witness ice-blue glaciers calving into dazzling fjords. Journey into the remote reaches of Glacier Bay National Park. Gaze across the horizon to catch a glimpse of an orca whale, or up at the towering sunlit totems of native Tlingit people. Kayak through hideaway harbors and hike picturesque backcountry trails. Itinerary

Day 1 Hike to a spectacular vista of Mendenhall Glacier, then gain your bearings aboard the Safari Explorer | Savor a bubbly toast as you sail west toward Icy Strait | Listen for the telltale blow of humpbacks as you cruise into the richest whale waters of Southeast Alaska.

Day 2 Coast into Glacier Bay National Park, a World Heritage Site that reveals remnants of the last Ice Age | Kayak along the rugged coastline for your first up-close view of the territory | Stroll along the shoreline or venture inland as your leader bushwhacks your own trail inland.

Day 3 Engage with a National Park Ranger who comes aboard to share expert insight about the movement of glaciers | Breeze into Tarr Inlet, where Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers calve into the icy water | Spot a black oystercatcher or tufted puffin amid the snoozing sea lions on isolated South Marble Island | Hike a trail along Bartlett Cove, where a forest of spruce and hemlock grows atop a glacial moraine.

Day 4 Voyage down the narrow Chatham Strait until the captain drops anchor in a remote inlet of Chichagof Island | Scan the shore for coastal brown bears—this area has one of the world's highest concentrations | Challenge your fellow travelers to a paddleboard race or opt to meander on land among moss-covered trees.

Day 5 Explore the remote Saginaw Bay on the northern end of Kuiu Island | Beachcomb along the secluded coastline and scope the intertidal zones for bears.

Day 6 Linger on deck to behold the spectacular sight of humpback whales gorging themselves in the krill- and herring-rich waters of Frederick Sound against the looming Coast Mountains | Along with bubble net feeding, today's whale performance may likely include tail lobbing, lunge feeding, pectoral slapping and breaching | Cruise past Five Fingers Lighthouse, Alaska's oldest light station  | Watch for porpoises and sea lions from the ship's deck.

Days 7-8 Travel by skiff into Endicott Arm, a dramatic glacial fjord surrounded by snow-covered mountains | Yes, those really are harbor seals lounging on icebergs! | At the end of the road, come face to face with a powerful river of ice—Dawes Glacier | Find your land legs in Alaska's capital, Juneau.

Please note: Due to the multiple stateroom options available on this trip, reservations can only be made by contacting one of our Trip Consultants at 800-462-2848 or via email.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodation

The ship we sail on is your floating hotel for the entire trip, letting you visit a new area each day while unpacking only once! The Safari Explorer is built specifically for journeys in remote wilderness areas and meets Backroads standards for Casual accommodations. This 36-passenger yacht is small by ocean standards and allows us to access some of the more remote parts of Alaska's Inside Passage that bigger ships cannot enter. Please note this means common areas are also on the smaller side.

Itinerary Flexibility: Going with the Flow

Our daily itinerary is based on scheduled sailing times, and as a result, some days have more opportunities for exploring on land while others have more time exploring by kayak, skiff or paddleboard or more time aboard ship. Weather conditions may also result in delays or trip itinerary changes, but rest assured that your Backroads Trip Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Stateroom Categories

In contrast to our land-based trips, which have similar rooms, Ocean Cruise trips offer a range of stateroom categories. The top-tier staterooms often fill fast so book as early as possible if this is important to you.

Terrain & Hiking on Your Own

There are very few developed trails in the rugged wilderness areas we visit and our routes will cover a mix of terrain including rocks, roots and moss-covered ground. Like all Backroads itineraries, this trip has been designed to offer as many hiking options as possible. Since many of the trails are unmarked, we recommend that you hike with a Backroads leader.
