Holland & Belgium Biking Map

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Behold timeless scenery straight out of a Dutch masterpiece  Begin with a leisurely ride from Alkmaar to Santpoort, located on the edge of a scenic coastal forest  Savor traditional pannenkoeken (pancakes) by day and Michelin-starred cuisine by night  In the spring, admire the vibrant floral designs at Keukenhof, the world's largest flower garden  Pedal past emerald-green fields, horse farms and windmills on your way to Holland's charming coast  A varied landscape of dunes and seaside lanes lead the way to The Hague, our home for the next two nights.

Day 3 Bike through polders and countryside to Gouda, where the beloved cheese originates  Delight in a visit to the World Heritage site of Kinderdijk, known for its 19 windmills once used to drain the surrounding floodplain  Taste a wedge of distinctive Gouda—or perhaps a slice of appeltaart?  Biking is a way of life in the Netherlands, and it's a pleasure to join the locals as you cruise through the region, passing dikes and quaint villages.

Days 4-6 Uncover the captivating history and culture of two countries in a single trip  Cycle over the border—welcome to Belgium!  It's a scenic spin to romantic Bruges—nearly car-free and ideal for exploring on foot  Discover the nooks and crannies of this stunningly preserved medieval city of narrow cobblestone streets, steep-gabled brick houses, lofty spires and meandering canals  Indulge your sweet tooth in Bruges—a chocolate lover's paradise!  Pedal to the Flemish town of Diksmuide, once the heart of Belgian resistance in World War I  Enjoy a final spin through forests and over the canals around Bruges.

I'm delighted to be offering this trip as one of our Breakaway adventures. The biking is excellent, with routes that follow a mix of bicycling paths (fietspaden) as well as flat, peaceful rural roads and dijk walls. You'll enjoy a fantastic variety of historic sites, such as the World Heritage site of Kinderdijk and the beautiful central square of Bruges. And the hotels are truly superb, including one that rests in a national park and features a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Navigating Bike Paths

The Dutch and Belgians are famous for their love of bikes. And that love of bikes has created an amazing network of bike paths and routes that extend throughout each country. Many of the paths we utilize on this trip are the equivalent of scenic byways, linking quaint villages and big cities alike. Navigating these intricate bike routes requires more attention to the GPS and directions than you might expect. Be prepared to make more stops than you usually would to ensure you're on the right track, all the while experiencing the occasional rush of riding among many locals as they commute and run errands by bike.

Why Travel with Backroads in Holland and Belgium

More Than Canals and Windmills...

...not that you won’t see plenty of both as you bike flat, quiet roads through landscapes straight out of masterpieces by Cuyp or van Ruisdael. After riding in Holland and Belgium for more than 20 years, we know both countries intimately and can share our insiders' take on everything from the best places to try a great beer or a chunk of Gouda (or both) to contemporary cultural attractions that provide an interesting counterpoint to the classic must-see sights.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Holland and Belgium trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Holland and Belgium trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Holland and Belgium designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Our Family Breakaway trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Holland and Belgium—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Holland and Belgium, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politic—and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.
