Myanmar Bike Tour

Burma's Ancient Mysteries

  • Travel by air to sacred sites and secluded areas rarely before seen by outsiders—you'll be one of the few!
  • Bike amid some of the thousands of iconic temples and graceful pagodas of ancient Bagan
  • Explore Inle Lake's floating gardens, ancient pagodas and entire villages on stilts—like scenes from another time
  • Behold traditional markets teeming with local products, spiritual enclaves and brilliantly green rice terraces

Rudyard Kipling described Burma as “unlike any land you know about.” Trust him. One hundred years later, his assessment still stands. Let us show you why we're enchanted by mysterious Myanmar. It's the temples. The landscapes. The complex history. The captivating culture. How often can you experience a place that defies expectations?

Itinerary

Days 1-3 Reach remote areas unfamiliar to western travelers by air | Embark on a magical evening stroll through the iconic 6th-century Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist structure | Bike amid some 2,000 temples and pagodas in Bagan | Travel by horse-drawn cart to a secluded temple at sunset | On a visit to a colorful market, engage with locals who have only recently come into contact with the outside world.

Days 4-5 In the valleys and mountains of the Shan State, visit traditional markets and fascinating spiritual enclaves  |  Explore a cave containing thousands of Buddha statues and shrines  |  The Pindaya area affords a rare opportunity to see Myanmar as it truly is—agrarian, relatively undeveloped and full of quiet charm  |  Spin past rice terraces, farmers tilling fields with water buffalo and wide-eyed Burmese, who seem thrilled to see us and our bikes  |  Savor authentic Shan noodle soup in the tranquility of a monastery.

Days 6-8 Pedal to heavenly Inle Lake and behold floating gardens, ancient pagodas and entire villages built on stilts  |  Hike to the top of a pagoda hill, passing the ruins of hundreds of ancient stupas in thick vegetation  |  Board traditional longtail boats to explore remote lakeside villages where we visit silversmiths, silk weavers and a private home.

I've traveled all around the globe for work and play, and the Backroads Myanmar trip will always be at the top of my all-time best trips. Experiencing Myanmar by bike allows the energy of the people and the essense of the culture to seep into your pores and fill your soul. We truly got onto the 'Backroads' on this trip, and the locals offer a sweet connection to travelers that is genuine and authentic. From monklets in the temples to women in the fields to men chewing betel nut in the village market - I felt like I really got a feel for the people and a sense of the land. We did the hot air balloon over Bagan and it was AMAZING - highly recommended. I loved the entire sense of journey and flexibility that the trip offered. Go to Myanmar before it's too late!!

Accommodations

In each location, we've chosen the best options possible. Our Casual Inn, Pindaya Inle Inn, just started catering to Western travelers. While at times humble and quirky, it's comfortable and clean, but has much more modest guest rooms than the other hotels on this trip. The Premiere Inns on this trip provide all the amenities typically found on Backroads trips, although they can be large resorts which lack some intimacy and charm. Service in Myanmar is improving day by day, but you might experience some of the service hiccups that come with only recently having opened their doors to tourism.

Biking in an Emerging World

Myanmar has emerged as an exciting new destination, but travel here can be challenging. It's very much a developing country, where the scarcity of resources and different attitudes can sometimes be jarring and may require more hardiness than on other trips.

Navigating Myanmar's streets and rural roads on a bicycle is both a physical and cultural adventure that requires quick thinking, patience and humor—and it's part of what makes the trip so memorable! Though the route distances may be relatively short, the terrain, road conditions, heat and humidity, and the need to be alert can make activity more physically demanding. We use mountain bikes to better traverse the less-than-ideal and ever-changing road conditions.

Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. But it's important to remember that even all the efforts of your Trip Leaders can't replace a poorly maintained road or revolutionize service standards. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you'll enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Beyond thousands of pagodas: Balance

By

Comments about Myanmar Bike Tour:

I really enjoyed this bike tour. If you're a big cyclist, the trip is not going to provide days on end of great riding. What it does provide is a really well balanced 8-day experience integrating culture, food, relaxation, exploration, beauty and, for lack of better word: magic.
I (25 years old) took this trip with my parents. What I love most about traveling with Backroads is that I truly get to share an experience with my family where all of us are just as much participants as the rest (as opposed to some of us getting to share an experience while one or two of the others figure out what to do and how to do it as we go).
That our leaders provided only the utmost care, support, and positive attitudes over the whole week only added to the enjoyment.
If you're looking to extend your stay, ask your Guest Services Consultant about switching your trip-end flight to Ngapali Beach. We spent two nights enjoying the water and down-time at the Ngapali Bay Villas & Spa (their spa treatments are the best in the country, as far as I'm concerned). Totally worth the detour.
Thanks Backroads!

Comments about Myanmar Bike Tour:

This was our second Backroads trip. First one was Bhutan (which is also in our top 3 best vacations!) so the Myanmar trip had big shoes to fill! It met and exceeded our expectations!! LOVED it and still talk about it with friends and family. We feel so fortunate that we were able to see this extraordinary country before moving back to the USA. I would highly recommend it, both Backroads as your biking adventure tour guide and the Myanmar trip.

Comments about Myanmar Bike Tour:

This trip was one that I will remember for a lifetime. The personal experience that Backroads is able to create in such a remote and unique country is really unbelievable. I went into this trip unsure of how it would turn out, given that this was my first time to a 3rd world country, but I already can't wait to go back. The culture, food, new friendships, amazing leaders, and stunning scenery will not be forgotten.

We loved seeing Myanmar by bike with Backroads!

Comments about Myanmar Bike Tour:

It's not too late to see Burma! Backroads did a fabulous job of taking us off the beaten path, while still being somehow active. The mountain/cross bikes were perfect for the terrain, and the routes were well chosen for both terrain and culture. The support team was outstanding - really, there every single time we wanted them, and then with a cool towlette even when we didn't know we wanted one. Crazy fun. The food is outstanding (we went back to Feel in Yangon twice!) and the leaders super knowledgeable. The properties are world class, and I felt that Backroads has navigated the land-mine-zone of how to develop tourism in Myanmar responsibly - not easy to find these days. Lifetime memory.

The way to do Myanmar is by bike, Backroads was exceptional

By

Comments about Myanmar Bike Tour:

We did Backroads 2nd bike trip to Myanmar and it was one of our best trips. Travel by bike allows you to get to temples and places where you will not see other tourists. You interact more with the local people and see things others don't. Matt and Chuck did an excellent job of organizing quite complicated logistics. One afternoon we gave them out bikes, the next morning we took a 2 hour plane ride and our bikes were there with bags and water bottles ready to go. Someone drove all night transporting the bikes. The hotels and meals were tops. This was a lifetime experience for us.

Why Travel with Backroads in Myanmar

We've Built Our Own Local Network

When Backroads first started exploring Myanmar, properly trained local guides simply didn't exist – at least not people who could support active travelers. So we developed our own guides, and they're now seen as the crème de la crème, while other companies still struggle to train their own teams. Similarly, when we couldn't find a vehicle to transport our bikes properly, we had one built from scratch. It's all about finding creative ways to maintain our high standards.

We Stand Behind Our Trips

Most companies' trips in Myanmar are run by local operators. At Backroads we manage our own trips; we would never subcontract your precious vacation to a third party. So as you enjoy the support of your seasoned Trip Leaders, along with our expert local guides and drivers, you have the confidence of knowing we're with you every step of the way.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Myanmar trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Only the Best Hotels

On this Premiere Inn trip, you can count on the best lodgings Myanmar has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

The Best Leaders in Myanmar

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Myanmar, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Myanmar you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great biking trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Myanmar—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.
