Itinerary

Days 1-3 Reach remote areas unfamiliar to western travelers by air | Embark on a magical evening stroll through the iconic 6th-century Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist structure | Bike amid some 2,000 temples and pagodas in Bagan | Travel by horse-drawn cart to a secluded temple at sunset | On a visit to a colorful market, engage with locals who have only recently come into contact with the outside world.

Days 4-5 In the valleys and mountains of the Shan State, visit traditional markets and fascinating spiritual enclaves | Explore a cave containing thousands of Buddha statues and shrines | The Pindaya area affords a rare opportunity to see Myanmar as it truly is—agrarian, relatively undeveloped and full of quiet charm | Spin past rice terraces, farmers tilling fields with water buffalo and wide-eyed Burmese, who seem thrilled to see us and our bikes | Savor authentic Shan noodle soup in the tranquility of a monastery.

Days 6-8 Pedal to heavenly Inle Lake and behold floating gardens, ancient pagodas and entire villages built on stilts | Hike to the top of a pagoda hill, passing the ruins of hundreds of ancient stupas in thick vegetation | Board traditional longtail boats to explore remote lakeside villages where we visit silversmiths, silk weavers and a private home.

The earlier you book, the more choice you'll have and the lower your price. And you can always change your mind — you won't be charged to transfer to a different trip before your final payment is due. View cancellation policy.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations

In each location, we've chosen the best options possible. Our Casual Inn, Pindaya Inle Inn, just started catering to Western travelers. While at times humble and quirky, it's comfortable and clean, but has much more modest guest rooms than the other hotels on this trip. The Premiere Inns on this trip provide all the amenities typically found on Backroads trips, although they can be large resorts which lack some intimacy and charm. Service in Myanmar is improving day by day, but you might experience some of the service hiccups that come with only recently having opened their doors to tourism.

Biking in an Emerging World

Myanmar has emerged as an exciting new destination, but travel here can be challenging. It's very much a developing country, where the scarcity of resources and different attitudes can sometimes be jarring and may require more hardiness than on other trips.

Navigating Myanmar's streets and rural roads on a bicycle is both a physical and cultural adventure that requires quick thinking, patience and humor—and it's part of what makes the trip so memorable! Though the route distances may be relatively short, the terrain, road conditions, heat and humidity, and the need to be alert can make activity more physically demanding. We use mountain bikes to better traverse the less-than-ideal and ever-changing road conditions.

Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. But it's important to remember that even all the efforts of your Trip Leaders can't replace a poorly maintained road or revolutionize service standards. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you'll enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Why Travel with Backroads in Myanmar

We've Built Our Own Local Network

When Backroads first started exploring Myanmar, properly trained local guides simply didn't exist – at least not people who could support active travelers. So we developed our own guides, and they're now seen as the crème de la crème, while other companies still struggle to train their own teams. Similarly, when we couldn't find a vehicle to transport our bikes properly, we had one built from scratch. It's all about finding creative ways to maintain our high standards.

We Stand Behind Our Trips

Most companies' trips in Myanmar are run by local operators. At Backroads we manage our own trips; we would never subcontract your precious vacation to a third party. So as you enjoy the support of your seasoned Trip Leaders, along with our expert local guides and drivers, you have the confidence of knowing we're with you every step of the way.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Myanmar trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Myanmar has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

The Best Leaders in Myanmar

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Myanmar, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Myanmar you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great biking trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Myanmar—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.
