Alaska Bike Tour

Journey from Anchorage to Prince William Sound

  • Embark on a true biking adventure in a remote section of Alaska experienced by few travelers
  • Ride in the shadow of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park's 16,000-foot peaks
  • Ferry across Prince William Sound—watch for seals and bald eagles!
  • Pedal beside the mighty Matanuska Glacier
  • Feel the immensity of Alaska's interior

The last frontier—not just a cliché but something you feel in your body. Unique things happen in Alaska. Grizzlies roam. Glaciers calve. Moose forage. You ride alongside wild rivers and stroll through famous towns like Valdez. Follow the trail of fur traders, miners and naturalists. One acre for every person. Things get put in perspective.

Accommodations & Service Standards

Alaska is a land of rustic and rugged beauty, and while Backroads has selected the best properties in the places we visit, simplicity and comfort outweigh elegance and luxury in this great state. While the Valdez Harbor Inn offers simpler accommodations than the typical Backroads property, it's been selected for its picturesque setting and access to the best riding in the region.

Generally speaking, service in Alaska can seem laid-back when compared with the high standards of service found on other Backroads trips.

While Backroads strives to find routes that are quiet and off the beaten track, that's not always possible in Alaska and some routes on this trip follow more heavily trafficked roads. Of course, you're always welcome to jump in the shuttle to avoid the busier roads.

Comments about Alaska Bike Tour:

Jenna and Eli are extremely talented and natural leaders. Backroads is lucky to have them. I had the privilege of being on their trip two years in a row. I love Backroads trips because of the great arrangements that are part of your trips and the attention to detail. Personally, I am most interested in biking in beautiful natural surroundings. Backroads allows me to do that without worrying about making arrangements on my own. I can't wait for my next Backroads trip. Thank you Backroads!!!!

Why Travel with Backroads in Alaska

You Came Here to Bike

After 30 years of biking Alaska, we know the routes that maximize riding time from hotel to hotel, with no shuttles (unless you want a van break, of course). There's one exception we think you'll forgive: when you're crossing Prince William Sound by boat, spotting puffins, seals and calving glaciers. And we hope you'll stop to meet some of our local friends – like the folks at Mendeltna Creek Lodge, who serve a hearty lunch by the fire in their historic roadhouse.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

Navigate Your Way in Alaska

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in Alaska. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Alaska—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Alaska trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

The Value of Casual Inn Trips

In addition to the ideal balance of comfort and hospitality in our choice of lodgings, this Casual Inns trip includes nearly all of your meals, plus everything from cocktail receptions to the best snacks along the road. So there's rarely a need to reach for your wallet – we've got you covered.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Choose Your Fellow Travelers

With Backroads you won't end up with kids on what you thought was an adult trip; we have exclusive departures for families, so they're off having their own adventures. As you browse our unrivaled selection of trips and dates, you can count on finding a trip in Alaska that's geared exclusively to your choice of traveling companions.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.
