Itinerary
Days 1-2
Start your adventure in the Czech Republic’s southern region of Bohemia, a region of pastoral landscapes and picture-perfect villages • After a picnic lunch at a hospoda (traditional country pub), climb into the Mount Klet' nature reserve through rolling pastureland, evergreen forests and roads lined with fruit trees • Take in the panoramic view from the summit of Klet', stretching from the Alpine foothills to the roofs of České Budějovice( home of the original Budweiser beer!) • Český Krumlov’s entire town center is a World Heritage site famed for its cobblestone streets, baroque and Renaissance houses, vaulted passageways and hidden squares • Krumlov Hrad, the second-largest castle in the Czech Republic, dominates the skyline • Hike into the hills for sweeping city views • Enjoy a tasting of Czech beers at a local pub.
Nights 1-2
A former Jesuit monastery from the 16th century, with a perfect location in the town's center. (pool, spa)
Days 3-6
Cross into Austria over what was once the Iron Curtain, discovering both contrasts and parallels between these sister countries • Cable cars and cogwheel trains whisk us to high alpine trailheads for our hikes at breathtaking lakes like Traunsee and Attersee • A taste of homemade apfelstrudel (apple strudel) hits the spot mid-trek at a cozy alpine hut • Rest your head at a medieval castle-turned-hotel set on a peninsula surrounded by glacial Lake Fuschl • Schuhplattler dancers treat us to a lively performance of local music • Check out the storybook village of St. Wolfgang and its backyard of Schafberg Mountain, where scenes of The Sound of Music were filmed • Bid farewell to our castle home on a neighborhood walk around the lakeside village of Fuschl.
Nights 3-5
Set on a wooded promontory on Lake Fuschl, this castle was built as the country residence of the archbishops of Salzburg in 1450—and remains consistently luxurious. (pool, spa)
