French & Italian Alps Walking & Hiking Tour
French & Italian Alps Walking & Hiking Tour

The setting is captivating: needle-sharp peaks soaring above flower-filled meadows. Storybook villages, forested foothills, pure blue lakes and welcoming rifugi. And majestic Mont Blanc, towering above it all. Warmhearted people with a knack for enjoying the finer things in life - like climbing mountains and relishing views of their glorious "backyard." And a pleasing mélange of rustic and chic, where cozy alpine chalets rub elbows with posh boutiques and restaurants. Join us to experience mountain life from two perspectives: français and italiano. Doubly sublime.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Two Leaders

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it’s an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you’ll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.

Day 1 Meander in glamorous Megève, tucked in the Mont Blanc foothills  Once a simple farming village, Megève now brims with luxury boutiques and is a delight to explore on foot  Journey up Mont d'Arbois via cable car for a warm-up hike that offers lovely views of the town from above  Savor a lunch of regional specialties, including homemade cheeses, at a high-mountain farm.

Day 2 Take in spectacular views of Mont Blanc while hiking on mountain trails across the Chamonix Valley From the town of Chamonix, at the base of Mont Blanc, a cable car whisks us to 5,175 feet to start our trek - don't worry, there's plenty of climbing left for your legs! Camera handy? Jaw-dropping vistas of Mont Blanc steal the show.

Day 3 Ascend by cable car to the Aiguille du Midi for breathtaking views of the Chamonix Valley and famed peaks After a hike along a spectacular ridge trail to Montenvers, relax over a tasty traditional mountain lunch Amble to the Signal de Forbes viewpoint and gaze down over the Alps' second-largest glacier.

Days 4-6 Welcome to Italy!  Get your adrenaline fix as you trek with expert haute montagne guides across the Glacier du Géant  Dive into a new language and cuisine - perhaps starting with a cappuccino? - and explore the gorgeous Val Ferret  Circumnavigate the Mont Blanc massif on a hike considered one of the best in the world  Indulge in a massage at the hotel spa beneath the shadow of Mont Blanc.

Guest Trip Reviews

The hiking itinerary was gorgeous - it allowed us to experience the Alps and Mont Blanc from the perspective of three different villages/cultures with an overarching exposure to alpine culture and what it means to live in such an environment. My husband and I had a wonderful time! Thank you!
