Amalfi Coast Walking & Hiking Tour
Amalfi Coast Walking & Hiking Tour

It makes an impression. Always has. Even back in 29 B.C., Emperor Augustus fell in love with - and acquired - Capri. That's the Amalfi Coast for you. From the first moment, you're transfixed. Must be something about standing hundreds of feet above the blue-green Mediterranean. Or the lemon-infused air wafting through olive groves. Or the fishing villages carved out of cliffs. Your feet glide upon centuries-old cobblestones. Up ancient steps etched into rugged hillsides. To the magnificent vistas from Path of the Gods. You know why the Roman emperor had to have it. You want to make it yours, too.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Terrain

The majority of the routes on this trip are short, but moderately strenuous with occasional steep sections. The most challenging aspect is the dramatic elevation changes. We're often climbing or descending steps and cobblestone paths into or out of a town. While you're free to take your time navigating these routes, you should feel comfortable with some steep ascents and descents.

Day 1 By foot and boat, explore gorgeous coastline and island treasures Shuttle into the mountains above the port town of Sorrento to a scenic picnic spot Spectacular vistas of the Amalfi Coast provide the backdrop as you hike cobblestone paths and steps along the edge of Colli delle Fontanelle Journey by boat to Capri and take a funicular up to our hotel, nestled on the lively piazzetta.

Day 2 The isle of Capri, with limestone peaks, narrow twisting streets and delightful gardens that have charmed visitors for centuries Hike along stone paths to Monte Solaro, the island's highest point Marvel at the famous Faraglioni rock formations Walk or take the chairlift to Anacapri for lunch and leisurely wander through this chic town's shopping district  Sail to Amalfi, a charming town with a colorful maritime history.

Day 3 The beautiful, dramatically terraced gardens of Villa Rufolo Stride through the Valle dei Mulini (Valley of Mills) past centuries-old paper mills and bubbling streams lined with wildflowers Relax over a cool drink in the hilltop village of Ravello, the "aristocrat of the Amalfi Coast" Our private walking tour of Amalfi offers an insider's perspective on this picturesque town.

Day 4 Join our local guide Maurizio, who brings the region's rich past to life en route to the village of Nocelle  Hike along the magnificent Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) Continue to Positano, where pastel villas cling to cliffs above a labyrinth of shops and fashionable cafés.

Days 5-6 Stroll timeless trails with glorious views of the Mediterranean Ascend through a forest of chestnut and alder to Santa Maria del Castello, the remains of a small castle  Head to a beloved family-owned restaurant that has been pleasing locals and visitors for decades  A walk to Fornillo Beach and a refreshing swim in the sea provide an ideal finale to your trip.

Guest Trip Reviews

My first Backroads trip. Met and exceeded my expectations. What did I love most about this trip? Not spending much time in typical tourist spots; viewing the magnificent coastal scenery from up in the mountains looking down; challenging myself to climb to 2100 feet and back down and doing it; having daily options; having everything else arranged so I could be relieved of the decision making; learning from our leader much about what Italian life and language is like; learning from the locals guides much about the history of the region; meeting and talking with local farmers and restaurateurs that I'd never meet on a typical vacation; hiking up the Path of the Gods in time to hear a live concert played by five horn players at the top of the mountain (an almost spiritual experience); the camaraderie and support of the other vacationers in our group. I'm sure we'll look at Backroads again for our next active vacation.
Trish Williams - San Jose, CA

Having been brainwashed by my partner, about how good Backroads is, my expectations were extremely high and as the trip grew nearer. I became increasingly concerned I would be disappointed. How wrong I was - the leaders' tireless efforts to attend to every need, infectious knowledge and enthusiasm for the region as well as clear empathy with the locals ensured Amalfi was not a trip, but rather an 'experience.' The leaders' acute attention to detail, efforts to organize things with locals - such as dinner with Michelangelo, the tour of the paper factory in Amalfi and hiking with Maurizzio were most enjoyable. The leaders clearly worked well as a team and I was amazed by their boundless energy, constant state of happiness and driving skills! I think they struck a good balance between walking/hiking, educational and leisure activities. I'm pleased to say that the trip not only met, but exceded my expectations and without needed to be prompted, I am already looking forward to my next Backroads adventure.
Jason Perl - Chigwell, Essex

I cannot believe how well run this trip was. From the activities, transportation, meals . . . everything ran like clockwork. Our leaders were incredibly professional, competent, and fun to be around. I felt like I was at "summer camp for grown ups" all week - meeting new friends, exploring nature, eating/drinking to my belly's content!
Lisl Schweers - Los Angeles, CA

The beauty of the quiet but challenging hikes with endless views of the Amalfi Coast will exceed your expectations. The fresh seafood is outstanding, and the contact with the locals allows for a much more intimate view into the culture and provides a perfect complement to the natural allure of this delightful region. The casual hotels are charming, with locations to match.
Kathleen Maich - Regional Manager, Italian Trip Operations

The overall trip was wonderful. The leaders were wonderful, had a strong knowledge of the region and they were flexible if members of the group wanted to take time away from hiking. They took 20 strangers and helped them to create a family-like environment.
Heidi Nadler - New York, NY

My wife and I have been on many tours with many tour companies and this was the best that we have taken so far. The accommodations and food were carefully thought out and planned with a view to staying at locations where we experienced the true feeling of the region and local flavor of food— the restaurants took pride in sharing their culinary specialties in each town we visited. Finally, when we stopped for lunch on our hikes, our leaders ensured that we ate with the locals, which enriched our trip. Overall, the quality and quantity of the food was the best that we have ever experienced on a tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
