Escape with us to greener pastures, where waterfalls tumble and soft-eyed cows graze. Where alpine lakes dazzle you with outrageous shades of blue and gondolas carry you within yodeling distance of glaciated peaks. And where a fine day's hike brings the reward of hearty cuisine and gracious hospitality in truly spectacular surroundings. You'll even sleep in the shadow of Eiger's north face. And somehow, you won't quite believe what you see. An altitude-induced mirage? Just another moment of alpine bliss in Switzerland.
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Terrain & ShuttlesFor the best riding on Switzerland's rugged terrain, we've chosen a combination of small, quiet roads and a fair number of unpaved bike paths. Our bikes are equipped with wider tires to accommodate the paths, but you need to be comfortable with the alpine elevation and the sometimes slightly bumpy terrain. Navigating the small roads requires more attention to the directions than you might expect. Be prepared to make more stops than you usually would to ensure you're on the right track.
We'll flatten some of the hills with strategic shuttles to give you a boost as often as we can, but please note that the bike paths limit the amount of van support we're able to offer. While you might not see the van every mile, we'll intersect with the route regularly at strategic points to meet you with water, snacks or any other assistance you might need.
Day 1 Savor fresh mountain air amid glaciers, meadows and pristine lakes Commute the Swiss way: by chairlift! Hike on a ridge above Lake Oeschinen, its crystal waters surrounded by limestone cliffs capped with snowy peaks and hanging glaciers Ready for a cold beer or cup of cocoa? Refreshment awaits at a traditional alpine hut.
Day 2 Decadent raclette and fondue paired with regional wines From cheerful flower-laden chalets to milk cows adorned with leather collars and brass bells, the scenery is quintessentially Swiss as you pedal through a serene valley In the lakeside town of Spiez, board a historic ferry and cross Lake Thun to Interlaken Hop aboard a cog rail train bound for Grindelwald.
Day 3 The famed Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau towering above the emerald-green landscape Hike from First Peak to Bachalpsee, one of Switzerland's most beautiful lakes Continue to the enclave of Bussalp or let loose on an exhilarating descent by Trotti bikes into Grindelwald Valley An alphorn serenade: music to a cow's ears and perhaps yours too.
Day 4 Postcard-perfect Swiss villages Pedal in the idyllic Lauterbrunnen Valley, home to more glacier-fed waterfalls than you can count Be awed by the sight of magnificent Trummelbach Falls, set deep inside a slot canyon Spin to turquoise Lake Brienz, then ferry to Giessbach.
