Hidden Gems from Cloud Forest to Volcanoes & the Pacific Coast
Costa Rica & Nicaragua - a double dose of exhilarating adventure. A glass of freshly made tamarind juice in one hand. A forkful of ceviche de camarones in the other. Azure ocean waves within winking distance. Yes - it's definitely heaven. Searching for sloths and colorful birds in a primordial rain forest. Biking alongside a lake so immense, early Spanish conquerors once mistook it for the sea. Marveling at volcanoes almost close enough to touch. Just another week in paradise - nothing short of perfection.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

On-Your-Own Activities

During the trip there’s time for you to enjoy one of Costa Rica’s favorite activities, zip-lining. This activity is often a highlight for those who choose to do it, but as it’s not to everyone’s liking it’s not included in the cost of the trip and participation is at your own risk.

Adventures in an Emerging World

Nicaragua has emerged as an exciting new destination, but travel here can be challenging. Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. But it’s important to remember that even all the efforts of your Trip Leaders can’t replace a poorly maintained road or revolutionize service standards. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Days 1-2 Soak up views of Poás, Irazú and Barva Volcanoes as we journey through Costa Rica's fertile Meseta Central Stroll on a coffee estate and observe the coffee-making process Walk in the cloud forest to discover three beautiful waterfalls Rafting on the Sarapiquí River, there's no telling what you might spot - sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous bird species Hike at Tirimbina Reserve, where you can cross what's reputed to be one of the longest suspension bridges in Costa Rica.

Day 3 Bid adiós to Costa Rica and fly to Ometepe Island, a World Biosphere Reserve in the middle of Lake Nicaragua Bike around the island, with Concepción Volcano looming in the distance and lush flora greeting you at every turn Kick off your shoes at the lakeshore or shuttle into the tropical forest for a soak in a volcanic mineral spring Ferry to San Jorge on the mainland, where our ocean-view hotel awaits.

Day 4 Enjoy a boat ride up the coast, stopping to swim in the Pacific along the way Walk through a tropical dry forest, watching and listening for its avian residents At our treehouse-style hotel, gain special insight into one of the world’s favorite treats - chocolate!

Days 5-6 Traverse coastal hills dotted with white plumeria, Nicaragua's national flower Ease into your morning with yoga before embarking on a hike Enjoy an afternoon of leisure or optional activities like horseback riding or golf Save some energy for our festive dinner and rum tasting! Go kayaking or take a walk through a village, where fishing, farming - and now surfing - are a way of life.
