Giant Trees, Beaches & Ocean on California's North Coast

It may take a while for reality to sink in. But as you gaze way up, it's soon clear you're standing among the tallest living things on the planet! Welcome to Redwood National Park - your family is in for a treat. Camp among 300-foot-tall trees that were alive before Leonardo da Vinci. Hike a canyon smothered in ferns. Play on wild beaches amid magical fog-filtered light. Kayak on a pristine lagoon. Bike shaded roads with nothing but the sound of your own breathing and your freewheel buzzing. California's redwoods - a peaceful kingdom awaiting your family's discovery.

Day 1 Prepare for a jaw-dropping new perspective!  Riding beneath the colossal trees along the Avenue of Giants is a magical way to kick off the trip In Humboldt Redwoods State Park, hike at Founder's Grove amid some of the planet's oldest residents The natural history of the mighty redwood comes to life at the park's visitor center.

Day 2 Bike into a prehistoric world, witnessing Bull Creek's primordial old-growth redwoods, breathtaking in age and beauty The Rockefeller Forest is truly an extraordinary sight - probably the most impressive stand of Sequoia sempervirens on Earth In Redwood National Park, try to wrap your head (and arms!) around Big Tree - it's 304 feet tall and 20 feet wide Kids spend a refreshing afternoon by the river.

Day 3 Charming Ferndale, with its splendid Victorian-style architecture, art galleries and antique stores, invites you to step back in time  Enjoy a gentle ride along rolling farm-studded hills as you head out from Scotia, a town owned by the Pacific Lumber Company The hike out to 107-foot-high Ceremonial Rock offers dramatic ocean views.

Day 4 Walk from Patrick's Point through lush ferns, salmonberry and salal  Kayak in Humboldt Lagoons State Park and scan the trees and marshes to spot shorebirds, and maybe a magnificent bald eagle or peregrine falcon  Looking to flex a cycling muscle or two? Pedal the Newton B. Drury National Scenic Byway, perhaps choosing to challenge yourself on the climb up Cal Barrel Road.

Days 5-6 Hike through a remarkable slot canyon with walls blanketed in ferns and mosses Keep an eye out for majestic Roosevelt elk that often graze in a nearby meadow Picnic on Gold Bluffs Beach before an afternoon hike to a forest waterfall Who's up for a game of tic-tac-toe on the sand?

Guest Reviews About This Trip

Soak up the silence and grandeur of forests unlike any other in the world, where fern-carpeted groves and enormous ancient trees transport you back to prehistoric times. Enjoy the misty and dramatic coastline, abundant wildlife and crystal-clear rivers of this rural area. Bike through picturesque farming towns that have changed little over the years. If you're looking to reconnect with your family while getting in touch with the majesty of Mother Nature, this is your trip.
