Traffic on the Blue Ridge ParkwayThe majority of cycling during this Carolinas trip is on roads with very little traffic; a minority of riding is on the Blue Ridge Parkway which has more traffic. We've planned to ride the Parkway on quieter week days, but it's important to be comfortable sharing the road with cars, or you can always take a lift in the van.
Days 1-2 Spin past scenic overlooks and through historic tunnels along the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway Natural beauty is all around you on the descent from Mt. Pisgah to Biltmore Forest Soak up the creative vibe of Asheville's River Arts District, brimming with art studios, galleries and lively music venues Step back in time as you explore George Vanderbilt's magnificent Loire Valley-inspired château and formal gardens, set on the 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate.
Day 3 Point your wheels south toward the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina If you enjoy rolling terrain, you'll love pedaling through this beautiful region of Southern Appalachia and classic Carolina farmland Stretch your legs on a short walk to view the majestic waterfalls of Dupont Challenge yourself on the ascent of Caesars Head or shuttle to the top - either way, the view from the summit is spectacular Among the vineyards of Hotel Domestique, watch the sun set behind the mountains.
Days 4-5 Relax at George Hincapie's Mediterranean-style Hotel Domestique Set out on a peaceful ride through the Greenville Watershed Area and experience a slower pace of life in the historic Victorian mountain village of Saluda Local pro George Hincapie calls this area one of the world's best places for cycling! At Restaurant 17, fuel up with a wonderful dinner created by chef Adam Cooke, "one of America's 40 Best Chefs Under 40" Ride the Swamp Rabbit Trail along the Reedy River into Greenville, praised by Outside magazine for its "parks, leafy streets, bike paths, and a thriving foodie scene."
