Family Fun Along Italy's Adriatic Coast
I spy with my little eye...something white. Is it the caps on the waves of the Adriatic? Could be. What about "the white city" of Ostuni? No cigar. The white-chocolate gelato dripping off your chin? Mom! No, try again. It's not the buildings in that cute fishing village we passed a few miles back? Nope. Matera's pristine troglodyte caves? Guess again. Well, then it's got to be the trulli. Those fun cone-shaped houses? Finally, mom! I'd like to live in one of those houses, they're really cool. Hey, mom. Can we come back to Puglia? The people are super nice and biking every day is really fun. I'd like to come back too, dear. Now, race you to that next trullo!

Navigating Bike Routes

All roads lead to Rome - and locals here know the way without the need for street signs along their lovely country thoroughfares. As such, many of our bike routes follow roads with little or no signage, which may require more attention to the directions than you might expect. Be prepared to make a few more stops along the way to ensure you're on the right track.

Days 1-2 Delicious meals of fresh seafood, local produce and homemade pasta are sure to appeal to the tastes of every member of the family  Pedal past fields of strawberries and fennel, and a sea of shimmery olive trees  Investigate the nooks and crannies of Polignano a Mare, a fishing town with narrow winding streets and limestone cliffs  Soak up unbeatable views of whitewashed hamlets and age-old farmhouses  The younger set gets the chance to exlore an incredible system of caves.

Day 3 Alberobello: a World Heritage site with 1,500 cone-roofed trulli - kids of all ages love these whimsical dwellings!  Join our local guide on a walking tour to learn about these unique stone buildings, constructed without mortar A family spin along rolling country roads leads through the fertile Val d'Itria to Savelletri, a small fishing town with a picturesque setting on the Adriatic.

Day 4 Peaceful lanes lead to Ostuni, la città bianca (the white city), which spans three hilltops and is crowned by a Gothic cathedral Kids connect with their inner artist at a traditional plate painting class by the beach.

Days 5-6 Hey, kids! Ever wonder how mozzarella is made? Learn how it's done during a visit to an agriturismo with a mozzarella master  Cooled by sea breezes, pedal beneath big blue skies and along the Murgia, a mighty limestone plateau  Uncover the secrets of Matera and discover its sassi, caves where troglodytes once lived! A World Heritage site, Matera is home to the largest number of prehistoric caves in the Mediterranean Youngsters learn the secrets of making gelato at one of our favorite gelaterie.

Guests Reviews About This Trip

For years now, we've been raving about how great the Puglia region would be for a family trip. And we've finally made it happen! The biking is great for a variety of abilities (the landscape here is pretty flat, so quite doable for the younger set). There's beautiful coastal scenery to enjoy, intriguing trulli structures (like little stone Hobbit houses) to check out, atmospheric whitewashed towns and of course, some of the most delicious seafood and pasta you'll find anywhere in Italy. Hope to see you there!
