Biking in Denmark is like riding through the pages of a fairy tale. Hans Christian Andersen, the country’s most famous author, surely found his inspiration in the pastel-hued villages, grandiose castles and picturesque rolling green landscape. Backroads leads you from one storybook town to another along well-marked bike paths and roads nearly free of cars. The pleasures of Danish summer life include feasting on fresh seafood and lingering in the extended daylight hours. When at last you’re coaxed inside, you’re welcomed at luxurious inns with a distinctive Scandinavian blend of country charm and modern style.

Days 1-2 nyborg

Meet in Nyborg Pedal through rolling Danish countryside  Enjoy a barbeque picnic lunch with local hosts and take a tour of their traditional thatched cottage  Pedal a coastal route with sandy beaches and shimmering ocean views Take a seaside spin to Kerteminde, where old half-timbered fishermen’s cottages line the beach and small museums invite exploration Ride to Ladbyskibet, site of an excavated 10th-century Viking ship.

Day 3 gudme

Bike along tree-lined roads past Ravnholt Manor, Funen Island’s largest manor house Visit the moated castle of Egeskov and stroll the grounds, which include several exquisite period gardens and the largest collection of fuchsias in Europe  Enjoy a private tour of Broholm, our home tonight. 

Days 4-6 millinge

Ride peaceful roads before catching the ferry to Ærøskøbing on the small picturesque island of Ærø, where shops and galleries offer handmade crafts and other local goods With cobblestone streets and multicolored houses capped with red-tile roofs, Ærøskøbing rightfully earns the billing of “fairy-tale town” Ferry to Faaborg and visit a local mill for a tour and picnic Enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at a local dairy and taste its delicious cheeses and yogurt.
