Rich History, Idyllic Landscapes & Superb Cuisine in New France

It would have been easier for Québec to abandon its roots. Lose its European ancestry. Turn its back on the French language. But it didn't. Everything about Québec oozes old-world Gallic charm. You'll feel it during your stay at Hotel Tadoussac, set directly on the shore of the majestic Saint-Lawrence River. You'll experience it riding through idyllic farmland on tranquil islands. You'll taste it in every exquisitely prepared farm-to-table meal. And the more you discover the region's distinct culture, the more you'll appreciate why Québec has stayed true to its heart.

Days 1-2 Hike and kayak near the mighty Saint Lawrence River and next to one of the most beautiful bays in the world Explore Tadoussac, the first European fur trading post in the New World Today the town is considered the preeminent spot for whale-watching in eastern North America Dolphins at two o'clock! You never know what you'll see as you walk and paddle along the majestic Saguenay Fjord and Saint Lawrence River.

Days 3-4 Look for breaching beluga, minke and fin whales during a boating excursion with a naturalist  Hike in the beautiful wooded countryside of Charlevoix at Palissades Park and pedal on tranquil roads to the riverside town of Saint-Simeon and the picturesque village of Port-au-Persil  Ferry to pristine rural Isle-aux-Coudres and spin past old stone cottages, white-steepled churches and farms selling cider  Stop at Les Moulins, an early 19th-century stone windmill and adjoining watermill that still churn out wheat and buckwheat flour for fresh bread.

Days 5-6 Ride bucolic roads stopping to visit artisans, vintners and organic farmers on Île d'Orléans, a little island with apple orchards, stone windmills and Normandy-style cottages  Enjoy sweeping vistas and pastoral roads before zipping to Québec City in our private Zodiac water taxis  Bike to the Plains of Abraham, site of a famous 1759 battle between the British and French  Try local delicacies on a gastronomic walking tour of old Québec City.

Guests Reviews About This Trip

Another fantastic getaway with Backroads! The itinerary for the trip really offered a glimpse of the diverse terrain the Charlevoix region has to offer. My partner is French Canadian, born in Quebec, and he was quite impressed with the places selected to visit. The views, the food, and the weather were all that we could have hoped for...but Philip and Michelle really made the experience just outstanding!
Donna Parsons - Atlanta, GA
Québec was beautiful, with the quaint villages, flower boxes on the charming houses and the abundance of wildflowers in the fields. The people were French-speaking and very friendly. We discovered that the Quebecers love to put maple syrup on everything - and everything tasted great! My husband and I loved the trip!
Vickie Kunst - Gardnerville, NV
The trip was a wonderful experience. As a first trip and introduction to Backroads, I am very impressed and hope to enjoy many more trips with Backroads in the future. The whole experience was a treat for all my senses, the smells, feel, sounds (often just the quiet surroundings) and most definitely the tastes were beyond anything I could have hoped for.
