Accommodations

Please note that Hotel Skaftafell is significantly more basic than the usual Backroads standard. We've chosen this property in the remote area of southeast Iceland for its superb location, amazing glacier views and proximity to our trip activities.

Days 1-2 On foot and by Zodiac boat, explore a glacial lagoon with an iceberg "sculpture garden" in its jewel-like water  A breathtaking landscape awaits in Skaftafell National Park, shaped over millennia by volcanic eruptions, glacial runoff and rivers  Hike through forest and heath to Svartifoss or "black falls," a stunning cascade pouring from hexagonal lava columns  Strap on crampons and trek over Falljökul (Falling Glacier), admired for its ice formations, water caldrons and pinnacles   At Iceland's southernmost tip, walk in the protected habitat of puffins, Arctic terns and guillemots.

Day 3 Ready for a quintessentially Icelandic outing? Hop aboard a "super jeep" for a drive across creeks and rivers near Katla Volcano Discover Thórsmörk, an alpine oasis of lime-hued hillsides, icy peaks and wildflowers  Hike from bizarre rock formations and canyons to a glacier tongue surrounded by pristine valleys, lakes and ice fields  A never-ending string of waterfalls line the Skógá River, including mighty Skógafoss, 200 feet high and set off by moss-covered rocks.

Days 4-6 Venture into the realm of bubbling mud pools and thermal rivers - up for a dip? Hike among geysers and streams and pedal through Thingvellir National Park, a World Heritage site  Stroll the shores of crystal clear Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland  Witness lava fields and steaming tributaries as you walk in the Nesjavellir geothermal area.
