We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The combination of Iceland’s prolific waterfalls, vast ice fields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island’s climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers, sturdy hiking boots and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in mid-trip itinerary changes, but your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.
Luxury Iceland-style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend to be a local buffet-style affair with limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience.
To access the best routes and most unique hotels in this expansive region, we’ve incorporated multiple shuttles into your itinerary.

Otherworldly with Out of this World Guides
It's hard to describe the world one enters when arriving into Iceland. Having travelled many places there is nothing quite like it. The journey started with a warm introduction by our leaders Nico and Natalie. BR takes a good deal of effort in training and supporting their leaders and these two were no exception. Warm, funny, knowledgable and interested in each traveler's story and interests. The group of 16 bonded quickly and enjoyed each others company throughout the adventure. Hiking, glaciers, volcanoes, geothermals, off-world terrain with great food (local, fresh and unique to Iceland most often). BR has a way of hooking one into becoming a regular guest just by how effortless they make each day for their guests. Sort of how Michael Jordan made basketball look easy. Kudos!

Backroads is amazing and the guides are top notch!
This multi-adventure trip was the perfect variety of activities including hiking, boat rides, glacier walking, cultural education. Our two guides were so fun, caring, smart, and a pure joy to be around. The landscape in Iceland is like no other place on earth -- in fact at times we felt like we were on the moon. Backroads takes care of all the details and logistics, so we get to totally immerse ourselves in the experiences. You will not regret booking this tour!

Otherworldly Beautiful
I cannot have imagined a more beautiful area for an active vacation. Waterfalls, glaciers, Kodiak boats on glacier lagoon, rip boats around Westerman Islands, puffins, and arctic fox all included!!

Fantastic, magical week in Iceland
Our extended family (four adults, two older teens) had a blast in Iceland. We hiked on glaciers, behind waterfalls, and up volcanoes; saw whales, puffins, and arctic foxes; and learned all about Iceland's geology, history, and culture. It was such a wonderful opportunity to do something cool as a family and to experience off the beaten path adventures! Our guides were amazing--knowledgeable, personable, and super fun. We'd definitely do another Backroads trip!
Fire and Ice and Snacks and Laughs
Our trip to Iceland was incredible. We got to experience so many amazing activities -- hiking on a volcano and a glacier, viewing puffins and whales, feeling the spray from a waterfall, floating among icebergs in a lagoon. The landscape of the country is varied and dramatic -- stunning views everywhere. What made the trip such a standout, though, was our leaders. Nico, Loesje and Xenia were fun, funny, and super-organized. They took care of everything so we could just enjoy spending time as a family.
Outstanding in every way, incredible experiences
The leaders, Loesje, Nicolas and Xenia made our experience memorable and fun with their attitude, knowledge and skills. This was a families trip, and our family had the time of our lives actively exploring Iceland through that hikes, boats and walks on the trip The hotels are amazingly comfortable and provided delicious meals for a variety of dietary preferences.

Incredible Iceland Adventure - What are you waiting for???
For anyone thinking about wanting to take a trip to Iceland - do it! This backgrounds experience was PERFECT to explore the wonders of Iceland! Simply knowing BR and the team would seek out only the BEST, most INTERESTING, and REPUTABLE outlets to work with, makes the journey even better! From the moment we arrived, the team was friendly, helpful, kind, supportive, encouraging and just a pleasure to work with. The hikes, the glacier walk, the zodiac tour, the journey around the islands, walking along black sand, viewing Puffins and other local wildlife ... simply incredible. Thank you BR for making this truly - an unforgettable experience!

Trip of a lifetime
This was the most amazing trip we have been on. There is so much to see and explore in Iceland, and Backroads has it all figured out to make sure you get the most out of the trip. The scenery everywhere is breathtaking, and the variety of activities, combined with the amount of different things we did, all combined to make this a perfect trip. We were blessed with good weather, so that also helped! I can't imagine trying to do Iceland on our own versus with Backroads. The experience would not have been anywhere near what it ended up being.
What a trip !!!
We had a fabulous time filled with so many fun and varied activities. Beautiful country and backroads made our Iceland adventure more special with attention to activities, our Comfort, well being and fun !!!! We had a wonderful group of likeminded vacationers. Our trip leaders - Carmen, Javier, Ty and driver Eva were OUTSTANDING!!! We Will be back for more.

One of our best vacations ever!
this was our first backroads trip and we had the time of our lives. Everything was spectacular. Our guides (Guillermo, Antonio, James, and Bassi) were knowledgeable, personable, helpful, and so entertaining. The itinerary and experiences were fabulous. We got some great workouts, saw some amazing landscape, stayed at very cool and comfortable hotels, ate delicious food, and, our group bonded so well that we all seemed to be very comfortable and at ease and I feel we've made some lifelong friends. We will definitely be doing more backroads trips in the future.
