  • Enjoy getting to know the Faroese people and their culture, immersing yourself in heimablídni ("home hospitality") as we dine in private homes

  • Sail through narrow sounds and moss-speckled sea stacks next to towering cliffs where nesting birds, including puffins, sing their summer songs

Start/End Reykjavík

Iceland & Faroe Islands Family Walking & Hiking Tour Map

Day 1 From the capital city of Reykjavík, we head to the Reykjadalur Valley for a hike in the rugged landscape around Mount Hengill | Pass bubbling mud pots with views of Lake Thingvellir | Visit the famed Blue Lagoon for a delightful soak in the celestial-blue geothermal pools.

Days 2-3 Fly to the almost-mythical Faroe Islands—self-governing, this group of volcanic islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark | Hike to the Faroe's largest lake for a view of the lake appearing to hang dramatically over the sea | Journey to Gjógv on Eysturoy Island, with its colorful turf-roofed cottages | Above town, hike through green open fields and climb to soaring clifftop vistas | Make your way to charming Soldarfjordur, with quaint homes dotting its shore and visit a garden and home overlooking the water | Embark on a guided walk marked with cairns, where we learn the history of coastal villages, including our destination of Rituvík, a hamlet with views of the island of Nólsoy.

Day 4 Journey through scenery right out of Middle-earth and an undersea tunnel to the capital city of Tórshavn | Walk to two small lakes and a dais of rocks used for public gatherings since the 1800s | With lovely island views unfolding, reach the historic ruins of Magnus Cathedral at Kirkjubour | In Vestmanna, take a guided boat tour around cliffs with thousands of nesting seabirds, including puffins and kittewakes | Look for brave sheep grazing on the near-vertical grass atop the cliffs.

Days 5-6 In the remote village of Saksun, admire the beauty of Dúvugardar Museum housed in a centuries-old farmhouse sitting between a lagoon and a waterfall | Set out along the river into mysterious mountains streaked with peaceful waterfalls | Encounter vistas of Risin and Kellingin—large rock structures sharply jutting from the sea | Celebrate during a special heimablídni evening in the home of our friends for a farm-to table dinner.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

The Value of Casual Hotels

In addition to the ideal balance of comfort and hospitality in our choice of lodgings, this trip featuring Casual Hotels includes nearly all of your meals, plus everything from cocktail receptions to the best snacks along the road. So there's rarely a need to reach for your wallet – we've got you covered.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.
