Itinerary

Days 1-2 Travel from Anchorage to the Knik River. You won't have traveled far from Alaska's busiest city yet you'll find yourself in a place remote enough to feel a world away | Helicopters whisk us over stunning scenery before landing next to a glacier | Which direction do you want to explore? With no trails to hem you in, the tundra and rocky landscape beckons.

Days 3-5 Travel to unspoiled Denali National Park and Preserve, a place so big that if you explored 1,000 acres a day, it would take you 10 years to see it all | Look for the Big Five—moose, gray wolves, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and caribou—as we venture deep into the heart of the park | Journey to Kantishna, a former mining outpost at the literal "end of the road" | Explore Denali with a variety of activities, from guided hikes to an optional "flightseeing" trip around Denali's towering summit | Pause at secluded Wonder Lake to take in stunning reflections of Denali and the surrounding mountains | Keep binoculars handy to view arctic loons and eagles | Celebrate the deep-seated culture of Alaska's gold miners | Take a stroll after dinner in the glow of the midnight sun—at this latitude darkness settles in for a mere four hours a day.

Day 6 Soak in the sunrise as we depart our remote wilderness lodge to travel along the 92-mile Denali Park Road eastward through the low valleys and high mountain passes of this pristine landscape | Along the way enjoy views of colorful Polychrome Pass and the braided Teklanika and Toklat Rivers | Gaze out over the carpet of tundra that harbors a variety of delicate plants including bright wildflowers and berries | Complete your Denali education at the park's visitor center | This is an epic journey you'll always remember.

The earlier you book, the more choice you'll have and the lower your price. And you can always change your mind — you won't be charged to transfer to a different trip before your final payment is due. View cancellation policy.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations & Service Standards

Alaska is a land of rustic and rugged beauty. While Backroads has selected the best possible lodging available in the places we visit, simplicity and comfort often outweigh elegance and luxury in this great state. Generally speaking, customer service in Alaska can seem slow and casual when compared with the high standards of hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Patience, a sense of humor and an appreciation for the cultural differences that abound in this population-sparse setting will help to make the most of your experience.

Alaska: Great Land, Great Distances

Did you know that Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas and four times the size of California? To experience the full grandeur of Alaska, we must cover great distances so we spend more time in the van on this trip than on the typical Backroads trip; (2–5 hours on several days). Rest assured, the views from these shuttles are spectacular.

Why Travel with Backroads in Alaska

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Alaska designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

The Best Leaders in Alaska

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Alaska, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Alaska trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

The Value of Casual Hotels

In addition to the ideal balance of comfort and hospitality in our choice of lodgings, this trip featuring Casual Hotels includes nearly all of your meals, plus everything from cocktail receptions to the best snacks along the road. So there's rarely a need to reach for your wallet – we've got you covered.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Alaska trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.
