Itinerary

Days 1-2 Witness the otherworldly rock formations of Bryce Canyon, once described by settler Ebenezer Bryce as "a hell of a place to lose a cow" | Among these brilliant red spires, you'll feel as if you're hiking through a petrified forest—or on another planet | Bike to Rainbow Point for views of the many layered Grand Staircase | Margaritas anyone? Get to know your comrades over drinks and a fabulous alfresco meal.

Days 3-5 Biking out of Bryce, point your wheels downhill through peaceful Red Canyon | Take your pick of inspiring hikes in Zion National Park | Don't mind getting wet? Hike the Narrows, one of Backpacker magazine's "Best Hikes Ever," a trek through the inner gorge of the Virgin River amid hanging gardens and sheer cliffs | Stroll to Emerald Pools or opt for the dizzying climb to Angels Landing | Pedal through quiet car-free Zion Canyon amid towering walls of Navajo sandstone.

We can't wait to welcome your family on this action-packed vacation in Utah, which features a fabulous combination of biking, hiking, camping, relaxing and memory-making. Just imagine six fun-filled days amid some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth—in the company of some of the friendliest, most active and adventurous families on the planet! We look forward to seeing you out there.

Interpretive Guides & Hiking Without Your Leaders

The National Park Service has many regulations on hiking. In Zion National Park you will begin your hike with your leaders, who will hike with you as far as park service regulations allow. You will then explore the remainder of the trails on your own. In Bryce Canyon National Park, your leaders can hike with you but can't act as interpretive guides. Throughout the trip, your leaders will give an orientation to the area's flora, fauna and terrain before your hikes. Thank you for helping us cooperate with each park's regulations!

Tents & Sleeping Essentials

Our spacious dome tents comfortably accommodate two adults plus luggage. On Family Trips we provide two adjacent tents for parents and children. Cots with an extra-thick inflatable sleeping pad, sleeping bag and sleep sheet are all provided. Backroads does not supply pillows, so please bring your own. No lighting is provided in your tent, so a small flashlight is essential.

Restroom & Shower Facilities

Restroom facilities are available at each campground but do not have flush toilets, running water or electricity. Shower facility floors can be wet, so be sure to bring flip-flops! We also recommend bringing a hanging toiletry bag since space is limited and surfaces are wet. Be advised that outlets and mirrors are few. Backroads does not supply towels, so please be sure to pack your own.

Attire

Comfortable, casual attire and footwear is strongly recommended—leave those heels or imported Italian leather loafers at home! Also be sure to bring along a few warm layers for the cooler evenings.

Why Travel with Backroads in Zion and Bryce

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Zion and Bryce trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

We Invented the Multisport Trip

After 30 years of creating Backroads Multisport Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.

The Best Leaders in Zion and Bryce

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Zion and Bryce, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Zion and Bryce with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multisport concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

No One Else Camps Like This

Only Backroads offers our style of Deluxe Camping in Zion and Bryce. Whether you're a first-timer or an old pro, you'll love how we immerse you in spectacular surroundings—and look after all the chores. Enjoy a great meal by the fire with interesting companions, then a peaceful night on your comfortable cot. Here's more on how we do the great outdoors.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Zion and Bryce designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Our Family Breakaway trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multisport trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Zion and Bryce you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
