Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Easygoing Adventure

This is a Level 1-2 trip, meaning the activities are easygoing and designed to allow us to take it slow and soak up the beauty of the region. Each day we embark on an active adventure, but the amount of time spent in the saddle and on the trails is less than the typical Backroads trip. We've paired our core activities with ones that are suited to this destination, such as kayaking and snorkeling. The level of these activities combined with plenty of downtime to relax and take advantage of the hotels, result in the ideal way to experience Mexico's Yucatán.

Shuttling

We often shuttle to access a variety of fun activities and local highlights. The Trip Leaders will be able to help you determine which shuttles you can opt out of if you are more inclined to stay at the hotel and reconvene with the group after a day of relaxation.

Terrain & Climate

Due to the region's tropical climate and infrastructure, road maintenance is a continual challenge and options for bike routes are limited. We've chosen the best routes and bikes to travel through a combination of quiet paths and more traveled paved roads, but still be prepared for unexpected potholes, large speed bumps and sections of rough roads.

Accommodations

After a couple of nights at a luxurious hacienda oasis, we spend one night at The Lodge at Chichén Itzá, which is simpler than the Backroads standard and the other resorts on the trip. This casual hotel was chosen for its proximity to Chichén Itzá allowing us to visit the site before the busy tourist hours. Then it's off to the coast where we stay at a sophisticated beach resort that offers an array of amenities and activities to enjoy.

Why Travel with Backroads in Yucatan

The Best Leaders in Yucatan

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Yucatan, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Yucatan trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Yucatan with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Yucatan designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
