California's North Coast—Redwood Explorations

  • Immerse yourself in the tranquility of majestic—and off-the-beaten-path—national and state parks
  • Pedal and hike among the planet’s largest remaining stands of towering virgin redwoods, learning about efforts to preserve them
  • Watch for bald eagles, seals and other wildlife while kayaking through protected lagoon waters
  • Enjoy campfire camaraderie in the open air while savoring fresh local seafood prepared by our camp chef

Can you hear it? True silence. It's a redwood grove specialty. Perhaps it's the immensity of these ancient trees diffusing all sounds from the outside world. Or maybe it's the fact that you practically have the park to yourself. It's a magical stillness. A serenity you'll never forget. And you'll never quite match.

Itinerary

Day 1 Bike beneath colossal trees along the Avenue of Giants | Hike at Humboldt Redwoods State Park in the company of some of the planet’s oldest residents | Stop at the park’s visitor center, where the natural history of the redwood comes to life.

Day 2 Feel like you’ve entered a prehistoric world as you walk amid ferns and old-growth trees, breathtaking in age and beauty | Visit the extraordinary Rockefeller Forest and attempt to wrap your head (and arms!) around the 362-foot-tall and 14-foot-wide Rockefeller tree | After a picnic lunch on the banks of the Eel River, explore the forest on the Bull Creek Loop.

Day 3 Journey to Big Lagoon for a kayaking excursion | As you glide across the water, survey the shoreline, marshes and surrounding hills for wildlife such as shorebirds, bald eagles, peregrine falcons and western pond turtles | Set out on a hike along the Rim Trail, a pathway once used by the native Yurok people, to a viewpoint offering a striking panorama of the rocky coastline.

Days 4-5 Head to Redwood National Park for an incredible hike among the tallest living things on Earth | Meandering toward the coast, learn about the redwood ecosystem and keep an eye out for majestic Roosevelt elk that often graze in a nearby meadow | Spend time exploring the expansive beach.

My kids kept saying how unreal the experience and all the views were. From the spectacular redwoods to the breath-taking ocean views. The joke was that it was a fake screensaver or a movie studio set, with piped-in chirping birds. But nope....very real...right in the midst of a crazy magical hike/bike ride/kayak. From start to finish, it was fantastic!!!

Tents & Sleeping Essentials

Our spacious dome tents comfortably accommodate two adults plus luggage. On Family Trips we provide two adjacent tents for parents and children. Cots with an extra-thick inflatable sleeping pad, sleeping bag and sleep sheet are all provided. Backroads does not supply pillows, so please bring your own. No lighting is provided in your tent, so a small flashlight is essential.

Shuttles

To bring you to our favorite parts of the Redwood Empire, we make liberal use of shuttles on this trip. So although you'll see the inside of the Backroads van on most days and will experience some longer shuttles at the beginning and end of the trip, consider it an opportunity to view some spectacular scenery while resting your legs in preparation for your next activity.

Restroom & Shower Facilities

Restroom facilities are available at each campground. The restroom floors can be wet, so be sure to bring flip-flops! We also recommend bringing a hanging toiletry bag since space is limited and surfaces are wet. Be advised that outlets and mirrors are few. Backroads does not supply towels, so please be sure to pack your own.

Why Travel with Backroads in Northern California

Traveling among Giants

Our Trip Designer grew up among the redwoods of Humboldt County. Each year he fine-tunes this itinerary to highlight the hidden gems of these 2,000-year-old forests. Whether you’re biking along the Avenue of Giants, hiking the Rim Trail and out onto Patrick's Point, or spotting eagles from your kayak in Humboldt Lagoons, you see this magical region through the eyes of a native son.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Northern California trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.
