Itinerary

Day 1 Enjoy a bald eagle's-eye view from atop Mount Constitution —you can spot the San Juan archipelago, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker and the Olympic Range  Ferry to Orcas Island for a fantastic day of hiking around Moran State Park, a nature-lover's paradise of 5,000 wooded acres  Feel like cooling off? There's nothing more refreshing than a brisk plunge into Cascade Lake.

Day 2 Spend the morning walking the pine- and fir-lined path around serene Mountain Lake on Orcas Island  Then head to Orcas Island Pottery, where superb one-of-a-kind pieces have been crafted since 1945  Settle in for a relaxing afternoon at Cascade Lake.

Day 3 Hike to the sound and board a chartered vessel for a wildlife-watching cruise to San Juan Island  On your bike, follow quiet roads through diverse scenery—from gently rolling farmland and forests to driftwood beaches and vast seascapes—and discover why San Juan Island is so beloved by cyclists  At South Beach, admire dramatic views of the Olympic mountains  Refresh with a dip in one of the lakes surrounding our campground.

Days 4-5 Paddle a kayak on peaceful inlets and vast kelp beds, perhaps spotting harbor seals, otters and bald eagles  Choose from an array of activities showcasing the best of San Juan Island  Pedal on roller-coaster terrain to Friday Harbor, where you can check out the Whale Museum before our final ferry ride.

The scenery was awe-inspiring in every sense of the word. From hiking to the top of Mount Constitution, to having an evening campfire at Spencer Spit State Park, this was my favorite Backroads trip. The biking was great; not too strenuous but enough for most people. Hiking through lush forests was a definite highlight for me. And kayaking around Roche Harbor was a nice change of pace. Thank you Backroads for introducing me to the San Juan Islands. I plan to visit again someday.

Tents & Sleeping Essentials

Our spacious dome tents comfortably accommodate two adults plus luggage. Cots with an extra-thick inflatable sleeping pad, sleeping bag and sleep sheet are all provided. Backroads does not supply pillows, so please bring your own. No lighting is provided in your tent, so a small flashlight is essential.

Restroom Facilities

Restroom facilities are available at each campground. The restroom floors can be wet, so be sure to bring flip-flops! We also recommend bringing a hanging toiletry bag since space is limited and surfaces are wet. Be advised that outlets and mirrors are few. Backroads does not supply towels, so please be sure to pack your own.

Attire

Comfortable, casual attire and footwear is strongly recommended - leave those heels or imported Italian leather loafers at home! Also be sure to bring along a few warm layers for the cooler evenings.

Why Travel with Backroads in San Juan Islands

Spectacular Views Are Not a Problem

We've been exploring the San Juans at a West Coast pace, taking the roads and trails less traveled, since the earliest days of Backroads. We link together great routes with help from island-hopping ferries and our network of local friends. And we're constantly fine-tuning them to keep what's great, revisit what's changed and ensure you enjoy the very best of these islands – whether it's an ideal spot for sea kayaking or a feast of perfectly prepared fresh salmon.

More Leaders to Support You

On our San Juan Islands trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In San Juan Islands you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

No One Else Camps Like This

Only Backroads offers our style of Deluxe Camping in San Juan Islands. Whether you're a first-timer or an old pro, you'll love how we immerse you in spectacular surroundings—and look after all the chores. Enjoy a great meal by the fire with interesting companions, then a peaceful night on your comfortable cot. Here's more on how we do the great outdoors.

We Invented the Multisport Trip

After 30 years of creating Backroads Multisport Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.

We Were Born Here (in 1979)

Backroads has been inviting active travelers to explore our own backyard since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. We offer more trips than anyone else in San Juan Islands, and we've spent more years finding the best ones. What keeps it real is having a consistent vision and the same passionately committed leadership for nearly four decades.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multisport trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in San Juan Islands live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Choose Your Fellow Travelers

With Backroads you won't end up with kids on what you thought was an adult trip; we have exclusive departures for families, so they're off having their own adventures. As you browse our unrivaled selection of trips and dates, you can count on finding a trip in San Juan Islands that's geared exclusively to your choice of traveling companions.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.
