Slow down and embrace island living. Let sea turtles set the pace as you snorkel alongside them. Relax on a beach under palm trees. The only rush is the one you'll get from seeing a pod of dolphins from your kayak. Or from feeling the wind on your face as you hike across the summit of Haleakala. There's no need to hurry on Maui and Lanai.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Watch for dolphins as you kayak through the pristine waters of Makena Bay | Snorkel with parrotfish and sea turtles near a colorful reef | Hike through the crater of majestic Haleakala, an active volcano and the highest peak on the island | Head to our elegant resort's beach club to stand-up paddleboard, swim in the ocean or enjoy time at the pool.

Day 3 Hike the Waihee Ridge Trail in the West Maui Mountains, one of Maui's favorite trails | Visit Lahaina, a charming island town with great shops and delicious shaved ice | Take a private boat to Lanai, the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii | Look for playful humpback whales that make the waters of Maui their breeding grounds through the winter (December–April) | Options abound at our splendid hotel—swim or snorkel at Hulopoe Beach, treat yourself at the spa, opt to take a yoga class or luxuriate poolside.

Days 4-5 Walk on the blissful Koloiki Ridge Trail amid guava and eucalyptus trees as you enjoy panoramic vistas of Maui, Molokai and the Pacific Ocean | Delve into the ancient traditions and plantation-era history at the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center | Take in the views on a coastal trail used by ancient fishermen | On our last morning, sleep in, stretch on the beach or greet the day with a scenic walk along the coast.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Easygoing Adventure

This is a Level 1-3 trip, meaning the activities are easygoing and designed to allow us to take it slow and soak up the beauty of the region. Each day we embark on an active adventure, but the amount of time spent in the saddle and on the trails is less than the typical Backroads trip. We've paired our core activities with ones that are suited to this destination, such as kayaking and snorkeling. The level of these activities combined with plenty of downtime to relax and take advantage of the hotels, result in the ideal way to experience the Hawaiian Islands.

Shuttling

We often shuttle to access a variety of fun activities and local highlights. The Trip Leaders will be able to help you determine which shuttles you can opt out of if you are more inclined to stay at the hotel and reconvene with the group after a day of relaxation.

Resorts

We've chosen to stay at large beach resorts on this trip because they are the most luxurious in the area and offer an array of amenities and activities to enjoy.

Peak Season

The holiday and spring break months are a great time to travel; however, with days off and the desire to escape for sunshine many others have the same idea. While we always aim to get off the beaten path, during certain times of the year crowds and delays are unavoidable.

OPTIONAL YOGA

Our Hatha style of yoga is for all levels and focuses on stretching for flexibility, strength building and balance to complement our active days.
