British Columbia's Undiscovered Isles

  • Discover one of western Canada's most appealing regions, with mile upon mile of pristine coastline
  • Commute the local way, island-hopping by ferry and water taxi
  • Hike Mount Galiano for the region's finest views
  • Sea kayak on calm waters in the realm of harbor seals and bald eagles
  • Extend your vacation in vibrant Victoria or Vancouver

Out here at the edge of the continent, the pleasures are simple. And while boutique wineries, local artisans and farm-to-table eateries are part of the daily scene, you won't have to hike, pedal or paddle far to imagine you've landed in a secret place. Where it's just you and the soaring eagles, with space to spare.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Urban, rural and wilderness scenery greets you on the Galloping Goose Trail, a bike path tracing a 1920s railway route Relish inspiring views of the Saanich Inlet en route to Brentwood Bay  Cruise “Vancouver Island's Most Beautiful Shortcut” aboard the Mill Bay ferry  Pedal past rural farms and vineyards in bucolic Cowichan Valley, one of Vancouver Island's best-kept secrets The mild microclimate here yields more sunny days than anywhere else in Canada! Set a leisurely pace, stopping along the way at small boutique wineries and roadside produce stands.

Days 3-4 Journey by ferry across the Salish Sea to Salt Spring Island, “the coolest island in Canada” according to the Washington Post Enjoy an undulating ride past island cottages, forested hillsides and lush farmland en route to Hastings House, our elegant oceanfront hotel Climb through arbutus trees on Mount Erskine to a stunning viewpoint with panoramic vistas over Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands Explore unique art galleries and whimsical shops in the town of Ganges.

Days 5-6 Watch for porpoises, bald eagles and—if we're lucky—whales as we travel by water taxi to Galiano Island The second largest of the Gulf Islands, Galiano offers quiet pedal-perfect roads that roll past rugged shoreline and stretches of forest interspersed with eclectic galleries and art studios Play hide-and-seek with harbor seals as you kayak the calm cobalt waters of Montague Harbor  Hike all the way from cool temperate rain forest to a lookout point on Mount Galiano for endless vistas of the surrounding islands and the Olympic Peninsula.

Why, oh why are the Gulf Islands such a well-kept secret? Well, lucky for you that they are!! While the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound are top of many travelers' lists, the Gulf Islands keep flying under the radar. Since they're north of Seattle, the Gulf Islands may conjure images of rain and more rain, but in fact they are in a rain shadow! While I was there it was nothing but clear skies, quiet roads / bike paths and adorable little towns. Down to earth charm at every turn plus very elegant hotels and restaurants. My favorite: Hastings House -- I'll never forget the breakfast hamper delivered to my room (before the "real" breakfast). I recommend giving yourself a night or two in Victoria before or after the trip. It's a super walkable city with a lively vibe, cute boutiques and galleries.

Comments about Victoria, Vancouver Island & Gulf Islands Multisport Adventure Tour:

My family has officially hit double digits on our count of Backroads trips, and this one was just as amazing as all of the rest. The rides and hikes were challenging but modified to fit our skill levels. The views were amazing, the food was spectacular. And, as always, the guides were the best we ever could have hoped for.

A romantic and adventureous Vacation to beautiful Victoria

Comments about Victoria, Vancouver Island & Gulf Islands Multisport Adventure Tour:

In the summer of 2016 we went with Backroads on a bicycle trip. It surpassed all our expectations. All the bike rides led through beautiful locations to arrive at luxurious yet serene hotels. Our tour leaders were friendly and helpful to a fault. They were also very knowledgeable about the local and native cultures and were excellent hosts. This is what a typical day looked like: After an early breakfast we would set about on the bicycles provided for us by Backroads. After some hours of pedaling through bucolic landscapes our skillful leaders catered delicious lunches procured from local farmers. There were always colorful, fresh fruits and vegetables rounding out the cheeses and cold meats. After lunch and some rest we did more pedaling to our hotel destination, where we could mingle with the other guests, who were all very interesting people. Several of them were returning guests! Optional activities included sight seeing at local artist studios and beach combing. They even let us to borrow the bikes for a side trip to the Bu It was one of the most memorable trips I have ever taken.

We Know Our Neighbours Well

Backroads first headed up to Canada in 1980, when an older Trudeau was prime minister, and we've been exploring its spectacular landscapes ever since. Our leaders are Canadian and many are proud to make their homes in British Columbia Islands—where we offer more trips than any other active travel company and have spent many more years finding the best ones.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Invented the Multisport Trip

After 30 years of creating Backroads Multisport Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in British Columbia Islands live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Only the Best Hotels

On this Premiere Inn trip, you can count on the best lodgings British Columbia Islands has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.
