There's magic here. Clear blue-green water. Warm white sand. A tropical breeze ruffles the palm trees overhead and carries with it a distant calypso melody. Maybe it's all the exercise. Maybe it's the sunshine. Or perhaps it's the islands themselves. Get ready to feel refreshed, pampered and relaxed. Like magic.

Itinerary

Day 1 Delight in the beauty of Nevis, a little-known gem of the Caribbean | Sample fresh tropical fruit and traditional island cuisine on the grounds of a former sugar plantation | Journey by private boat to the pier of our luxurious hotel.

Day 2 Hike through a lush rain forest to waterfalls | Take in sea views at our lunch spot on the verdant slopes of Nevis Peak | Hike past the remains of a historic plantation | Options abound at our hotel—go kayaking or snorkeling, cool off in the infinity pool or relax at the beach.

Day 3 Explore the island on two wheels, cycling past old sugar plantations and historic villages | Enjoy a Caribbean-style lunch on a white-sand beach | Set out on a kayak excursion from postcard-perfect Oualie Beach.

Day 4 Relish gorgeous scenery and refreshing Caribbean breezes on a boat trip to St. Kitts | Pedal the island on a coastal road to Kittitian Hill | Stop in at a black-sand beach for a dip in teal-blue waters | Savor authentic West Indies cuisine with locally foraged ingredients | Luxuriate at our boutique guesthouses overlooking the Caribbean.

Days 5-6 Hike on Mount Liamuiga, the highest spot on the island | Visit Brimstone Hill Fortress, a World Heritage site | Find your center in a yoga class with a view.

As I've come to expect, the trip was well-planned and in a beautiful location with the right amount of activities and free time. The only reason I've scored it a 9 rather than a 10 is because my "experience" included a bone-bruising bike wreck on Day 4. Without the bike wreck, a perfect 10. Leaders Ed Krajsky and Aly Dudek were the best. So, while the bike wreck was 100 percent my fault, it has to be factored into this question of "overall trip experience" in order to avoid "grade inflation." After all, if I can go flying over the handle bars of a bike, bruise bones I didn't know existed, and have to hobble around the last day-and-a-half of the trip, and still say "10," then the rest of my evaluation becomes suspect. So, it wasn't a perfect 10, but only because I did not follow one of the rules our leader, Aly Dudek, explained very clearly on our first bike ride route rap, with visual aids no less (a flip chart, one chart of which addressed the very infraction I committed), and which rule I knew well anyway from my own cycling experience--give yourself plenty of room behind the rider ahead so that you can see obstacles in the road. I was drafting another rider, who, correctly and to his credit, pointed to the utility-cover hole depressed a good four inches into the asphalt, that then, before I could change my line, reached up and grabbed my front tire and stopped it cold. Physics took over at that point and the 15 mph I was spinning was transferred from the bike to my flying body, which was then slowed considerably when it came into contact with the non-moving roadway.Other than that, however, it was a great trip.

Activity Level & Terrain

If you've ever been on a Backroads trip, you know we pride ourselves in offering a wide variety of activity levels each day so you can choose how much or how little activity you want to do. Although the biking on this Caribbean trip is on the easier side, guests looking for even more adventure can choose some challenging hiking routes, including a hike that can be muddy and includes a section requiring the use of both your hands and feet, with tree roots for handholds. This is a far cry from rock climbing, but still best for those who are game for the challenge of a technical and rugged trail. Activities may also seem more difficult than the route rating suggests due to the hot and humid tropical island climate.

Why Travel with Backroads in Caribbean

More Leaders to Support You

On our Caribbean trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Caribbean with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multi-adventure trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Caribbean you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Caribbean trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Caribbean—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Caribbean has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Choose Your Fellow Travelers

With Backroads you won't end up with kids on what you thought was an adult trip; we have exclusive departures for families, so they're off having their own adventures. As you browse our unrivaled selection of trips and dates, you can count on finding a trip in Caribbean that's geared exclusively to your choice of traveling companions.
