What's Included
See moreStraight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On many nights, the gourmet restaurants where we dine offer specially prepared, limited or fixed menus featuring a delicious selection of authentic regional cuisine.
While we always aim to get off the beaten path, this region is a popular coastal vacation spot for European tourists. You’ll be among locals and fellow travelers when we visit towns, and there can be moderate car traffic on some of the country roads where we bike (cars in this area are very respectful of bikers).
Amid Basque Country and the Pyrenees foothills, you can look forward to some great climbs and steep descents on our hike and bike rides. If you want a boost, e-bikes are available and we can flatten some of the more challenging portions of the routes with strategic shuttles, but you should be comfortable handling hilly terrain or hopping in the van for a lift.

Amazing Trip to Basque Country
We absolutely loved this trip to Basque Country. We learned so much about the Basque people and culture while hiking and biking through the beautiful countryside. A good level of activity with various options each day to do more or less. Perfect for our teenagers that wanted a little less challenging options and my husband and myself who wanted the more difficult options. Beautiful accommodations at each stop.

Trip of A Lifetime
Perfection. Hard to know where to start!
Great Family Adventure
This was our first Backroads trip and our favorite family adventure vacation to date. The trip was so well planned with great activities, lodging and meals. There is something for everyone. The Basque Country is beautiful and the rides and hikes are set up for you to see and enjoy it. The best part is the people, the fantastic trip leaders and the other familiies. Borja, Mathilde and Carlos are amazing leaders and made sure that everyone on our trip had a great time. We could not have asked for a more thoughtful and fun team. We all bonded so well and so quickly that it was hard to say goodbye. We look forward to doing another Backroads family adventure soon.
Incredible experience!!
Every aspect of the trip - food, accommodations, activities, beauty of the towns, weather, and especially the trip leaders - was perfect! Truly an extraordinary experience!
Fantastic trip!
This was an awesome trip with great food and a great mix of activities. The hiking turned out to be my favorite with a beautiful hike of the French countryside that shows the coast, picture perfect French villages and beautiful hills. The surfing was also especially memorable! The Basque Country has some of the best food around too, whether it's washing down some pintxos with beer or a Michelin star dinner this trip definitely has food covered.
Best of Basque!
Experience the best of Basque on this multi-adventure tour! The views are priceless, the activities are fun and engaging. Surfing in San Bastian memorable! Great for foodies too!

Exceptional guides and adventures
So well-planned with flexibility built in. This is a very cool tour. The hikes are spectacular. Having the opportunity to try surfing for the first time was just so much fun. BACKROADS does not mess around. They are organized and ready to give you a great experience.

Wonderful setting and cultural opportunity

My wife and I (65 and 71) joined a good bit younger group and had a great time. The biking and hiking by day in the Pyrenees and the evenings down on the beach (with some morning surfing) was a great blend as was the very interesting Basque culture and history (be sure to read about the Spanish civil war before you go). Fabulous food and not too taxing (I had torn my knee up before we went and it still worked out pretty well except for some of the Jai-Alai playing).
The multisport Basque country trip was unforgettable!
This was our first experience with an active travel company and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the week in Basque country. Our group was comprised of 7 travellers and 2 group leaders. Initially, I was a bit disappointed that we did not have a bigger group. In reality, it was a blessing since the smaller group meant we had time to really engage with the other guests, and spend more time with the leaders. From the first introductions at the hotel in Bilbao, we were very comfortable and impressed with the organized and friendly vibe. The week was indeed an adventure, not just with the physical activities, but also with the dining and exploring that took place in the evenings. We both agree that we will return to Backroads again in future.
