Vietnam & Cambodia Family Breakaway Bike Tour

Old Indochina from Hanoi to Angkor Wat

  • Enjoy exclusive access to an ancient Hanoi temple rarely visited by foreign travelers
  • Hoi An—Vietnam's oldest town, beautifully preserved and a delight to explore
  • Behold a sunrise ride to the Angkor Wat ruins, an unforgettable sight!
  • Explore the historic monuments of Hué, once the capital of imperial Vietnam
  • You and your family are in for a treat—savor some of the most delicious cuisine in Asia

Asking "Why Indochina?" is like asking why you ride. The anticipation of what's around the corner? The thrill of a place you've never been? Maybe it's the serenity of a 2,000-year-old footpath. The fun of passing rice paddies in a blur of speed. Or touching Angkor's ethereal ruins. Everything that's exhilarating about biking makes this trip an adventure—for you and your family.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Explore the city's lively neighborhoods via cyclo  With its treelined boulevards, parks and French colonial architecture, Hanoi is called the “Paris of the Orient”  Grand mausoleums of past empires line your ride through small rural villages  Ready for a cycling thrill? Share the road with food carts, water buffalo, locals scootering to work and kids biking to school  Enjoy the profusion of lotus blossoms on Tinh Tam Lake, peach blooms in spring and the blaze of flame trees along the Perfume River in summer  Savor some of Asia's freshest and tastiest cuisine.

Days 3-4 Explore the historic monuments of Hué—former capital of imperial Vietnam—including the Royal Citadel, modeled after China's Forbidden City and the site of intense conflict during the Vietnam War  Behold Hoi An—Vietnam's oldest town, beautifully preserved and a delight to discover  Bike over Ocean Clouds Pass en route to Danang.

Days 5-6 Ride through Cambodia's stunning Angkor ruins, a metropolis built to glorify Khmer kings  Searching for a keepsake? There are plenty to pick from on Cam Kim, an island famous for ornate wood carvings  Leaving the tourists behind, pedal past bucolic settlements and vibrant green rice paddies on wonderfully quiet roads.

Days 7-8 Visit iconic temples such as Bayon and Ta Prohm  Ride through tall grass, past ox carts, wooden homes held up by stilts, old Chinese tractors, and ponds usually teeming with kids swimming or fishing  Spin through peaceful, seemingly undiscovered rural villages  Take a sunrise bike ride to Angkor Wat and explore the temple grounds on foot.

Biking in an Emerging World

Your journey through Vietnam and Cambodia will probably be unlike any other travel experience. The people you'll meet and places you'll visit will likely stay with you for a very long time. As wonderfully fulfilling as travel is in this region, it's not always easy. These are developing countries and even something as simple as crossing the road can be a challenge. Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. Of course, we can't remove haze and noise from the air, or replace a poorly maintained road. But if you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you'll enjoy your trip to the fullest!Due to the varied road conditions on our routes, we have specially fitted our bikes in Vietnam and Cambodia to maximize your comfort and control. In Vietnam, you'll have the choice of Backroads bicycles with upright or drop handlebars. In Cambodia, all Backroads bikes come with upright handlebars, as the terrain includes some rough roads with dirt and sand sections. Upright handlebars are safer and more comfortable over these mixed-surface roads.

Note: There is less than 25% of riding on hard-packed dirt on this trip. Since the overwhelming majority of the trip is paved, we've elected to use standard road bike tires on our titanium road bikes. Most guests find this to be the right answer. If you prefer to skip the dirt, a shuttle is always a possibility.

Why Travel with Backroads in Vietnam and Cambodia

No Hotels You Have to Rationalize

Backroads is the only active travel company exploring Vietnam and Cambodia that ensures you enjoy the finest accommodations throughout your trip. We don't try to cut costs by slipping in inferior hotels alongside one or two good ones. We choose properties with the luxury amenities you expect – plus easy access to the best rides. By upholding our high standards and managing every aspect ourselves, we remain the leader that others follow in this part of the world.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Vietnam and Cambodia trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

We Stand Behind Our Trips

Most companies' trips in Vietnam and Cambodia are run by local operators. At Backroads we manage our own trips; we would never subcontract your precious vacation to a third party. So as you enjoy the support of your seasoned Trip Leaders, along with our expert local guides and drivers, you have the confidence of knowing we're with you every step of the way.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Vietnam and Cambodia designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Our Family Breakaway trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Vietnam and Cambodia, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politics – and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Vietnam and Cambodia—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.
