Rockefeller, Jr., make for superb biking  Donning harnesses and helmets, youngsters go rock climbing with expert guides at oceanside Otter Cliffs  Spin through Northeast Harbor, a quintessential small town complete with art galleries, a town market, and only one "downtown" intersection  Spectacular vistas abound as you pedal past classic Acadia scenery like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Cadillac Mountain  Browse Bar Harbor's shops or simply relax at our hotel  Partake in a traditional Maine culinary experience—a lobster pound!

Day 3 Discover the understated beauty of Maine's coastline as you pedal along Penobscot Bay Start your ride in picturesque Belfast, passing charming 19th-century cottages along the way  Kids have a splashing good time at Norton Pond, where we stop for a picnic lunch and a swim  Experience the unique summer community of Bayside, described by the Washington Post as a "refreshing reminder of a simpler time."

Days 4-5 Get to know enchanting Camden, brimming with galleries, museums and shops, and often called Maine's prettiest seaside village Grown-ups enjoy a hearty ride through the undulating hills around Camden en route to the delightful town of Hope  Opt for a hike up Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park  The fresh coastal air and beautiful scenery around Rockport invite a last scenic spin.

Lob-stah, never-ending sunsets, quaint hamlets with gorgeous coastline!! A super-special memory making trip for our family!! Lovely accommodations, delicious meals and fun biking routes that met everyones interests and skill levels. Really appreciated the additional activities for kids which my two teenage boys enjoyed -- rock climbing and buoy boat making. Guides were amazing!!!!

Outstanding first family bike trip!

Comments about Maine Family Bike Tour:

The Maine trip was a wonderful way for us to try out Backroads as a family! We especially loved seeing Acadia National Park, but the second half of the trip was very cool, too. The routes were challenging enough (pretty hilly in parts) but with great family ride options, and the best parts were the true "back roads" with beautiful rolling hills and farms. THANK YOU for the kids activities -- it was a great mix and perfect balance for all of us. Also, I would add that we signed up for the optional kayaking trip on our own, and it was one of the highlights for us, just adding another experience. I can't say enough positive things about Amanda, Meagan and Josh -- kudos to Backroads for continuing to provide great service and leaders!!

Comments about Maine Family Bike Tour:

It was a once in a lifetime experience! The guides were engaging, well informed, and very attentive to all of our needs! The scenery was breathtaking and there was an appropriate level of challenge for everyone from my teenage daughter to my very active, fit husband. And the food- every meal- even the snacks were incredible!!
We met other families and just all clicked in a very friendly, low pressure way. And A couple of them, I feel, will be our friends for life.
We Can't wait to do it again!! Thank you Backroads!

Note: To make for the most comfortable ride to this particular trip, we've outfitted our titanium road bike with slightly wider tires. You'll appreciate this on those stretches of the route with hard-packed dirt (approximately 20% dirt and 80% paved). Maine's landscape is characterized by constant rises and valleys, and the continuously rolling terrain can make routes feel more challenging than the mileage may suggest. Liberal van shuttling is incorporated into the itinerary and mileage is moderate to enable you to spend more time exploring on your own.

* Includes shuttle.

Please note that our distance and elevation figures come from Ride with GPS. Other sources (such as Map My Ride and Garmin devices) may give differing elevation figures due to different GPS and mapping technologies. Readings from a Garmin or a smart phone are influenced by other factors such as air pressure.

Why Travel with Backroads in Maine

Teach Your Kids to Rock Lobster

It’s one thing to learn how to eat a lobster, but what about meeting a working lobsterman and setting an actual trap? It's all part of the experience on this unique family version of the only biking trip that combines Acadia National Park, with its rugged cliffs and famous carriage roads, and seaside rides along Penobscot Bay through charming towns like Camden. Our Trip Expert, who grew up in Bar Harbor, knows how to bring this coast to life for younger guests.

The Best Leaders in Maine

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Maine, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Like You, We're Family Experts

At Backroads we've honed our expertise in active family travel over many years and a lot of trips. We host at least 20 times more family guests than any other active company, so we're constantly gaining new insights that make our trips even better. Detailed planning, behind-the scenes logistics, unrivaled support from three Trip Leaders—all backed by a team that proudly creates the kind of experiences we'd want to share with our own families.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

Navigate Your Way in Maine

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in Maine. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

Custom-Designed Bikes for Kids

Only Backroads provides bikes specifically designed for younger riders. Find out more information on all of our kids' bikes and optional accessories. And check out Tom Hale's blog post about biking with your kids.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Maine—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Maine you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Time Together, Time Apart

Backroads is the leader in designing trips that ensure everyone, young and young-at-heart alike, has an amazing time. Your Backroads Family Adventure balances family activities with diversions designed exclusively for the kids—giving the adults a welcome break from making decisions, other than choosing whether to explore a few more miles or just enjoy each other's company. A family vacation where everyone gets to relax, recharge and have fun – what a concept!

Only the Best Hotels

On this Premiere Inn trip, you can count on the best lodgings Maine has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Maine live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for a single family of three or four people, subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.
