Navigating Bike Paths

Germans are not only known for their passion for beer, but also for bikes. And that love of bikes has created an amazing labyrinth of bike paths and routes that extend throughout the country. Many of the paths we utilize on this trip are the equivalent of scenic byways, linking quaint villages and big cities alike. While we are on bike paths in larger cities, be prepared for the occasional rush of local riders as they commute and run errands. These wonderful bike paths are refreshingly car-free, which means that there are stretches of limited van support, although you'll still be supported by leaders on bikes. Although most of the paths are smooth and paved, there are some sections of interlocking bricks, gravel, cobblestone and hard-packed dirt that can be muddy during downpours.

Air-Conditioning

Hotel Bayrisches Haus and Hotel Zur Bleiche Resort & Spa are Premiere Inns housed in beautiful historic buildings. While they offer outstanding service and amenities, please note that they are not equipped with air-conditioning. Despite the region's generally temperate climate and cool nights, guestrooms can occasionally become warm during peak temperatures.

Why Travel with Backroads in Germany

Two Germanys United

While your kids take to kayaks on the canals of Spreewald, you can try punting – or head for the renowned spa at Hotel Zur Bleiche. And everyone comes together for a Michelin-starred dinner. This is how we explore the heart of Germany, Backroads-style. Of course it helps to have a Trip Expert who was born in this part of the world and can draw upon a lifetime of connections to create a great family trip where most active travel companies barely scratch the surface.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Germany trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

Navigate Your Way in Germany

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in Germany. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Time Together, Time Apart

Backroads is the leader in designing trips that ensure everyone, young and young-at-heart alike, has an amazing time. Your Backroads Family Adventure balances family activities with diversions designed exclusively for the kids—giving the adults a welcome break from making decisions, other than choosing whether to explore a few more miles or just enjoy each other's company. A family vacation where everyone gets to relax, recharge and have fun – what a concept!

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Germany you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Germany trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

A Great Trip for Teens

This Family Adventure, with its blend of challenging activities and cool places to explore, is ready to erase the doubtful looks of the toughest travel critics around: teenagers. We're not saying there won't be a single eye-rolling response (or the odd WhatsApp exchange with the gang back home), but this trip has plenty to keep teens in the moment and part of the family.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for a single family of three or four people, subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Germany—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.
