Crater Lake Bike Tour

Bend & the Central Cascades

  • Embark on challenging routes amid magnificent scenery in Central Oregon's high country
  • Skirt the rim of Crater Lake's world-famous caldera—one of Bicycling magazine's favorite rides
  • Experience unsurpassed beauty along the rave-worthy Cascade Lakes Highway
  • Soak up the scene and refuel at a craft brewery in outdoorsy Bend
  • Get your cowboy on along the wooden boardwalk of historic Sisters

Now this is living! Sun shining. Kicking back on the deck of the lodge. The indescribable blue of the water. Thirty-four vigorous miles around the rim, with views of Crater Lake from every angle—each new vista better than the last. You're still mesmerized. You might even say you couldn't wait for tomorrow... if life weren't so perfect today.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Astonishing Crater Lake, the country's deepest lake, is uniquely beautiful and seemingly undiscovered Pedal rolling terrain against a backdrop of thick conifer forests Cross into Crater Lake National Park—ready for the 2,500-foot climb to the top of the crater? As you circle the rim of this enormous caldera, you can't help admiring the lake's intense sapphire color and amazing clarity Each curve in the road brings another incredible vista, from the cinder cone of Wizard Island to the 9,000-foot peak of Mount Scott Unwind at the lodge or explore the spectacular landscape on foot.

Days 3-4 Two-wheel it along the Cascade Lakes Highway, a National Scenic Byway that meanders through forests, lava fields and lake-dotted valleys Spin in the shadow of Broken Top Mountain and the Three Sisters' volcanic peaks—the most demanding ride of the trip but also the most rewarding!  Pedal through the heart of central Oregon where glistening alpine lakes share the expansive high desert landscape with forests of pine, fir and hemlock.   Cruise into Bend on your bicycle and celebrate with a pit-stop at one of 26 craft breweries

Days 5-6 Cycle to the lively Old West-style town of Sisters via one of Oregon's scenic bikeways  Revel in the incredible mountain views and rugged landscape of Central Oregon   Winding rivers, expansive lakes and distant craggy Smith Rock provide a scenic backdrop for the ride  Pedal along McKenzie Pass, one of Oregon's most beautiful road biking routes, past ancient lava flows and into the lush valley  A gourmet picnic at Belknap Hot Springs is the perfect way to end a memorable week.

This is my fifth backloads trip and I was not disappointed in anyway. Nice group of guests

Accommodations

Crater Lake Lodge is a historic national park Lodge that offers simpler accommodations than typical Backroads lodging. It has been selected for its stunning location on the rim of Crater Lake, and its access to world-class riding. Although clean and comfortable, the guest rooms are basic and are not equipped with televisions or air-conditioning (nights are usually cool due to the high elevation). Generally speaking, service can seem slow and casual in national parks when compared with the high standards of hospitality found on other Backroads trips.

Comments about Crater Lake Bike Tour:

As always, the Backroads team put on an amazing tour. The Oregon scenery was, most of the time, breathtaking. It was a good mix of challenging riding and some fun rolling hills. And, of course, the leaders made vacationing on a bike almost too easy.

Comments about Crater Lake Bike Tour:

This trip was everything I was hoping for and more. Stunning scenery, challenging climbs, rewarding downhills, gorgeous hotels, incredible Backroads leaders, and of course the breweries of Bend. I also loved that my family, who are not serious cyclists, were able to ride as long as they wanted and then explore on their own without feeling pressured. This trip set the bar high - it was my first of hopefully many trips with Backroads!

Why Travel with Backroads in Crater Lake and the Cascades

A Better Way to Go around Bend

After many years of riding amidst magnificent scenery in the high country of central Oregon, we've redesigned our classic route around Crater Lake – a volcanic caldera hailed as one of the world's great biking destinations – so you now begin and end your journey in the colorful town of Bend. Whether you opt to float through town on the Deschutes River or unwind at a local craft brewery, it's a great home base for dining, shopping and relaxing between amazing rides.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Crater Lake and the Cascades—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

Navigate Your Way in Crater Lake and the Cascades

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in Crater Lake and the Cascades. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

The Best Leaders in Crater Lake and the Cascades

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Crater Lake and the Cascades, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Crater Lake and the Cascades you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Crater Lake and the Cascades trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Crater Lake and the Cascades trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.
