Carmel & Big Sur to Santa Barbara Wine Country Bike Tour

Waves, Wine & Two Wheels along the Pacific Coast

  • Bike along iconic Highway 1 on California's central coast
  • Rugged cliffs plunging into the deep blue Pacific—talk about stunning scenery!
  • Taste award-winning wines in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley
  • Savor three nights at Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, a guest favorite
  • California cuisine at its best—as varied and exceptional as the rides themselves

It's the dream road. Hugging California's coast at the very edge of the continent. Winding past redwoods, rugged cliffs and crashing Pacific waves. Sea lions, lighthouses, Spanish missions and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Luxury inns and sun-kissed Santa Ynez Valley vineyards. Coastal scenery that takes your breath away.

Central Coast California

Itinerary

Day 1 Bike world-famous 17-Mile Drive, rolling through dramatic coastline and catching a view of Pebble Beach  Arrive in the storybook town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, where you can browse art galleries, boutiques and cafés Visit an 18th-century Spanish colonial mission in this seaside haven.

Day 2 Ride in the shadow of towering coastal redwoods in Big Sur State Park  Pedal the cliff-hugging Cabrillo Highway past wind-torn cypresses Soak up the bohemian vibe of Big Sur Village, perhaps taking time to lounge in an Adirondack chair and cool your feet in the Big Sur River  Take in the views at Point Lobos State Park.

Days 3-6 Discover the vineyard-laden Santa Ynez Valley  A pastoral inland route leads to Los Olivos, with Victorian buildings, eclectic artwork and alluring tasting rooms  The afternoon is yours to taste wines or olive oils, visit a lavender farm or pamper yourself at the spa.  Pause to take in the isolated expanse of sand and surf at Jalama Beach   Get to know the town of Solvang, a dash of Denmark in California.

The only bad thing I can say about his trip is that we had 26 people and only two guides plus a driver. That is really not enough support when you have riders spread over 20 miles or so. The Big Sur portion is a challenging ride and with some huge climbs. As it is a narrow winding road, it is moderately dangerous as there is a lot of car traffic. I would still recommend it as the scenery is spectacular. The wine country portion is easier riding on quieter roads.Accommodations and food were superb.

Traffic, Terrain and Shuttles

While Backroads strives to find routes that are quiet and off the beaten track, we bike 17-Mile Drive and Highway 1 through Big Sur, which are both popular with cyclists and drivers alike, especially during holidays and the busy summer season. The majestic Highway 1 along the California coast includes long climbs and steep downhill stretches, exposed overlooks, and at times little or no shoulder. Just remember to keep to the right, ride single file, and go at your own pace. Of course, if you decide to skip some of the hills, you can hop in a support van and enjoy the view.

Why Travel with Backroads in California Coast

Turning from Water to Wine

This unique biking trip bridges two essential California experiences: taking in the epic vistas along the Pacific Coast at Big Sur, and exploring the oak-lined hillsides of Santa Barbara wine country. And after days of great rides and private tastings, look forward to relaxing each night at comfortable luxury hotels like the Carmel Valley Ranch – voted Best Resort in Northern California by Condé Nast Traveler readers.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in California Coast—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Navigate Your Way in California Coast

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in California Coast. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our California Coast trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

More Leaders to Support You

On our California Coast trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.
