Costa Rica Adventures – Finding the Right Trip for You

In my experience, you can't visit Costa Rica without falling in love with the culture, scenic wonders and endless beauty of this small central American country. It's truly a special place! And if you're traveling with Backroads, you'll find yourself with the option of four different adventure-filled itineraries. How do you choose the one that's best for you? After leading trips in this region for the past two years, I've learned the ins and outs of each of our remarkable trips to Costa Rica. Here's my insider advice to help you settle on your perfect Costa Rican getaway.

Biking in Costa Rica

Our Costa Rica Family Multi-Adventure Tour: Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio Park is a casual hotels trip offering the most choices for vacationers of different ages who are traveling together. If you're looking for an action-packed, family-friendly adventure... this trip is the one for you! The itinerary offers a whole lot of flexibility, so you never feel like there's only one option or activity to choose from. For example, the first two days of this trip are focused on biking around the famous Arenal Volcano. If biking isn't your thing, there's also the option to go to see how chocolate is made and explore some hanging bridges between the trees. Next, the itinerary ventures deep into the middle of the jungle for a glamping experience where the wifi signal may be weak but the sounds of nature ring all night. This hidden gem in the rainforest is often the place our guests remember most. Here you can try out the fastest waterslide in Costa Rica, sip drinks at the bar or watch the sun set between the mountain passes. Our next stop is Manuel Antonio National Park, the jewel of the Pacific Coast, where there are a variety of activities that will surely appeal to all ages in your family. Hiking, surf lessons, walks, traditional mask painting, ocean kayaking, or simply hanging out in a pool overlooking the ocean are all possibilities while visiting this famous beach town destination. Overall, this trip is great for people who love to move, want to try local foods and need more than one option to keep the whole family happy!

Our Costa Rica Family Multi-Adventure Tour: Highlands to Manuel Antonio National Park is a premiere hotels trip offering a fun adventure for families with younger kids who'd like to stick together and take part in activities that range from relatively easy to a bit more challenging. There are amazing opportunities to relax and treat yourself, as we begin our journey high up in the Talamanca Mountains at a world-class spa and resort. The whole family can try out zip-lining and an excursion to a family-run sugar mill before taking it down a notch to relax at our resort, opt to venture out on a hike or take in a horse show. We visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Costa Rica where you have the option to hike or ride on horseback down to the alluring swimming hole beneath the tumbling falls. Then we're off for some glamping before rafting away the following morning. From there, we venture into Manuel Antonio National Park followed by our final days at a resort on a quiet beach, where your family can cap off their vacation by biking down the beach, learning to make chocolate oceanside or taking a surf lesson just outside their hotel room! People often love the slower pace of this trip and the activities that keep the whole family together.

Our Costa Rica Multi-Adventure Tour: Cloud Forest & Volcanoes to the Pacific Coast is a premiere hotels trip plus it's a great option for classic travelers (couples, friends & solos) looking to get a taste of the different climates and regions of Costa Rica. This itinerary starts at an eco-resort high in a cloud forest where you can relish cool and often rainy nights from the comfort of your own outdoor jacuzzi. By day we set out on bike rides, hikes and a mystical waterfall adventure in a quiet mountain town before making our way to warmer temperatures at lower elevations for white water rafting and the hot spot of the Arenal Volcano. Here you'll enjoy some Backroads exclusive treats such as a private cooking class with one of our favorite locals who teaches us the secrets of fine Costa Rican cuisine! Next, we take a challenging bike ride through the rolling hills surrounding Lake Arenal. We then fly to the beautiful coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, where we stay at a stunning resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Here we also have the opportunity to learn more about the famous scarlet macaws before a coastal hike and relaxing final afternoon on our private beach! You'll leave this trip feeling like you've experienced all the varying climates and biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer, so be sure to pack accordingly!

If your true passion is to experience this country on two wheels, check out our Costa Rica Bike Tour: Arenal Volcano to the Pacific Coast. This is a classic premiere hotels trip (for couples, friends & solos) that starts in the charming northern town of La Fortuna where we cycle around Arenal Lake, visit some incredible hot springs and take part in a cooking class. You'll experience the area from the view of your saddle for three days before we make our way to the remote beaches and forests of the Nicoya Peninsula where we see wildlife, learn from local naturalists and take private boat tours. It's great for cyclists who can handle the heat then relax with a coconut in hand, refreshed by the surrounding natural beauty.
