Congratulations to the winners of the 2008 Photo Contest!
This year's photo contest proved that our guests are amazing photographers. The 3 winning photos were selected from a field of nearly 4,200 images revealing the natural splendor, cultural sights and spontaneous moments on Backroads trips.
First place is awarded to Donald Riedel from Patagonia Hiking.

Photographer's Notes
The photo was taken about a ¼ mile from the Explora Lodge. This was our fourth day at the lodge in the early morning. I looked out the window of the room and noticed this was an unusually calm and clear morning with some unusual clouds. Part of the credit goes to the Explora Lodge which has a location in the park that gives you quick access to pictures like this.
Photographer's Notes
We were walking down a street in Hoi An, when the yellow wall and the bright blue shutters caught my eye. Then I saw the woman. My husband told me to "hurry
up," but I was not leaving without the picture. The town of Hoi An was beautiful, so picturesque, abundant with flowers, and
lanterns. The colors seemed to be exploding from the markets and storefronts, but here, on this street, this scene seemed to say it all.
Photographer's Notes
At the time I took this photograph, I am confident that all I was thinking was, "Cool shot!! How much fun does that look?" When I look at the photograph now, I see a little girl staring up at her mother with awe and pride. I see an apprehensive, but exhilarated young woman trying something for the first time in her life.
Also, congratulations to Gretchen Long, who won the $200 Patagonia MLC Suitcase for participating in the contest voting!
We invite you to enter the Backroads Photo Contest. Good luck!
