If you're the breed of traveler who gravitates toward the earth's hinterlands, this may be one of your life-list trips. Here in the vast, rugged frontier of Iceland and Greenland, the sense of unexplored wilderness is omnipresent. You'll feel it on a wind-scoured beach amid the primordial cries of kittiwakes and razorbills. You'll feel it as you gaze in awe at an iceberg-studded fjord, and as you listen for the telltale rumble of the planet's most active glacier. You'll sense it in the surreal, otherworldly beauty of the midnight sunlight. From vibrant Reykjavík to a lively Inuit town to a remote outpost where sled dogs outnumber the humans, adventure awaits at the edge of the Arctic Circle.
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Meals & Service StandardsBecause agriculture is limited in this rugged region, produce can be in short supply - while meat and seafood is abundant, fresh and local.
Also note that due to Greenland's remoteness, you may not always experience the level of convenience or service that we expect. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest!
Days 1-2 Bask in the white nights of the midnight sun If you're able to tear yourself away from the breathtaking views of Hvalfjördhur (Whale Fjord), embark on a hike across a lupine-blanketed plateau to Iceland's highest waterfall Journey to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, fondly dubbed "Iceland in Miniature" thanks to its dramatically varied scenery Craggy cliffs, bizarre moss-covered rock formations and wind-whipped beaches await discovery as you hike along the coast.
Days 3-4 Gain an eagle's-eye view on our flight to Greenland Tour the picturesque arctic town of Ilulissat, check out the bustling fishing pier and perhaps visit a museum Greet the day with a boat cruise through icebergs from Ilulissat to Oqaatsut This colorful settlement of hunters and fishermen boasts twice as many sled dogs as people A postcard-perfect walk through a typical arctic coastal landscape reveals grassy tundra, pristine rivers and mossy bogs.
Days 5-6 The perfect blend of culture, the best fish you'll ever taste, and sublime natural sights Walk along the sea to witness the staggering Ilulissat Icefjord, a World Heritage site containing some of the world's largest and most active glaciers Listen to the intense cracking of the ice and soak up the stunning blue-green color of the lakes and ocean Witness the golden-hued glory of the midnight sun as we sail among giant icebergs - it's a memorable experience!
- Experience summertime's "white nights," courtesy of the midnight sun
- Explore the rugged windswept realm of the indigenous Inuit
- Watch and listen for calving glaciers on the amazing Ilulissat Icefjord
- Savor some of the freshest and most delicious seafood you've ever tasted
- An ideal add-on to our Iceland Walking & Hiking trip - extend the adventure!
